Any one else totally dissatisfied with the locking / unlocking experience?

I see your comment that it sounds like you're coming from a Porsche.

My previous vehicle (prior to the Rivian) was a 2007 Chevy WT.

Obviously different expectations, but I find the Rivian *amazing*. That said, I still miss Android Auto and Sirius XM. ?

She has an iPhone 14. Is there a setting in the iPhone somewhere to make it more responsive?

iPhone 14 works fine, make sure Bluetooth is on and location services is set for always (app does not need to be open to work) or only when using app (app needs to be open to work).

Edit, Thought I would add, I usually have my phone in my hand when approaching my R1S, seems to work pretty consistently like that. If it is in my pocket or gym bag is when I see some delays in unlocking.

I never thought it an issue for me as I do not keep the phone in my pocket when driving so almost always have it out before I get to the vehicle.

4. Sometimes we park in the driveway and not the security of our garage. Since we have passive locking turned off at home, there is no way to lock the vehicle without stopping to take out my phone or fob. Again totally ridiculous.

I have proximity turned off at home also (don't like it activating in the garage, etc.) and the best/easiest way to lock the vehicle is just simply hitting the lock button on the upper lefthand portion of the main screen when it's in my driveway before I get out. The car locks, I get out, and shut the door.

We took delivery on Saturday and I must say the locking / unlocking is even more annoying than I anticipated. Why couldn't they just have installed a touch sensor on the door so you could lock / unlock by touching it? My 2015 Porsche has this feature and it works great and reliably, 8 years later!

1. There is only one fob, so my wife and I each can't have a fob. Therefore, we must use phones or the cards.
2. We have turned off passive lock / unlock at home because I go in and out of the garage a lot and I am always carrying my phone. Having to pull out my phone and open an app every time I want to unlock my vehicle is absolutely absurd for an $80k vehicle in 2023.
3. Phone proximity unlock isn't working for my wife at all

I needed to vent. I am wondering if anyone else is as frustrated as I am.

I have all these same issues, and I've had my truck for over a year, every update I hope it gets better and it doesn't. I've had 2 different phones, Pixel 6a and 7a respectively, and neither works well.

As another issue the key FOB is also very unresponsive for unlocking, usually takes several presses and its often delayed annoyingly. For such a tech savvy truck some of the simple things radio and unlocking has given me issues all along.

have had the truck for 6 months. the proximity lock/unlock and paak worked so inconsistently that i disabled it and never turned it back on. from what i've heard its improved but haven't given it a go.

to me the most annoying thing is the lag and unresponsiveness of the lock/unlock.

i mainly use the key fob and i have to press it multiple times in order for it to respond. and this isnt from the truck being asleep. this is also when i've arrived at my destination, gotten out to lock and and it just sits there unresponsive. very annoying when every other car ive owned from a Corolla to a Lexus take only one press and work basically every time.

I feel the same. Locking is a solution in search of a problem. Having button would have solved almost all the issues.

I gave up on phone and use a fob most of the time. Proximity on phone is off. It's also off at home. It's on for fob, away from home only. Car is in a garage at home, so it's not the end of the world if it stays unlocked sometimes.

I found that fob works more reliability for proximity. Still have to press and wait for it to wakeup, if the car is sleeping.

AC and all the other noises don't bother me as much and I got used to them. The frustration with access is here to stay.

The PAAK seems to have gotten worse I've had way too many times now where I'm standing at the door waiting and finally have to take out my phone and open the rivian app. I'm also getting more and more frustrated when standing at the frunk or tailgate and it locks the truck meanwhile my wife is looking at me because she just got locked out as we are trying to load the vehicle.

I try not to complain much but come on...

I turned off proximity locking a year ago and have been 100% fob life since then, very happy. My only complaint is that they only included 1 fob and the carbiner doesn't lock. (Battery life could be better too.)

Prox locking is neat but since it makes a parade out of unlocking/locking with the door handles, mirrors, lights, sound, etc., it's not feasible for home or e.g. camping, tailgating, etc. More trouble than it's worth. I think the actual does it unlock when I get there" function works fine but it's not desirable to me unless it's a totally silent/invisible function (ala the Model 3/Y lock/unlock).

Hoping the upcoming model revs include more sophisticated keys (e.g. Apple's UWB car key thingy) but in the meantime I'm happy with the fob.

Well, short answer is.. you get used to it.. and started to accept it as is..

I have the similar experience with Tesla also.. so it's not just Rivian issue.

This is exactly why I always have all three options on me. The PaaK and card are there by default, but I keep the fob as well. A couple days ago, in a parking garage the car unlocked as I was 100+ feet away, then yesterday it didn’t unlock until I reached for the handle then at home, since proximity is off in the garage, my son used the fob to lock and it didn’t for 3 tries, then locked on the 4th. Could be something else happening, with the last, as I wasn’t able to roll up then passenger window all the way up, it kept stopping with an inch open until I took it all the at down and then up.

With that said, I had not tried to use PaaK for about 6 months. I've had it on but just always had my key. Last week I got to the gym, got out of the truck and didn't have my fob in my pocket... Started looking all over and realized I left it at the house. So, got forced to trying it out. It's worked pretty much flawless in the 4 days since. Guess i'll give it a go and just start carrying the card just in case.

Why couldn't they have just included a metal key so you can lock / unlock like normal? Even my 1973 Beetle has this.

And while we're fogeying, If they can land a man on the moon then they should be able to make phone as a key work

I actually don't have any complaints here. I use my fob, just like I do with my other vehicles, and it works.

The thing i find annoying is when I get into the car and then it seems like it doesn't recognize me and I have to hold my card against the driver door - which never works.

I agree with others about the it probably being more the phone thing. I notice walking up to the car first thing i have to open and fire up my phone for the car to pick it up and open.

Like a lot of cars these days, too much unnecessary complication in the pursuit of being all "fancy high tech". That's why I love my Jeep.

That is annoying. Fortunately has only happened to me a handful of times. Next time it happens, try switching your phone's bluetooth connection off/on in lieu of reaching for the key card. This has worked for me.
