R1S
After a long wait, I am finally configuring my R1S. I am coming from two Teslas (we are an all electric family and can't imagine going back to ICE cars), and we are super excited about the R1S. We test drove an R1S a few months back and we are excited for all the improvements since then (such as the software update for the suspension, gauge view, etc.). I have tried to be on top of all Rivian news, but it looks like there are many on this forum who are more knowledgeable about all things Rivian. So I wanted to see if there were any reasons to delay delivery for an R1S. I am guessing that mine will show up sometime in March 2024. But I remember reading that there was going to be a factory shutdown in spring/summer of 2024 for upgrades/updates. Also, in 2025 with NACS being incorporated, I wanted to see if anyone recommends waiting for that (that's another loooong wait). A lot of hypotheticals and coming from a Tesla I am used to unannounced changes (good or bad). Since many already own their Rivians, would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks a bunch.

Much like Tesla if you wait for the next feature update.. when that feature comes there will be another on the horizon. I don't see any reason to wait if the financials make sense. Its an awesome truck!

Keep in mind that not all things are good when waiting. There are several people that do not have 12 volt plug in frunk, 12 volt plug under dash, Meridian sound system, wood trim behind the front seats, etc.

My thought, if you see something you like, pull the trigger and don’t worry about future possibilities. No matter when you buy, there will always be some new widget right after.

No reason to wait because you'll be denying yourself an excellent vehicle. There's always something newer and better on the horizon but right now the current offerings are great. I have had mine for a year now and I'm still extremely happy with it so much so that I wouldn't buy anything else for myself.

I usually trade every 3 years and with this I'm most likely just going yo trade to the exact same vehicle.

As others have implied, if you wait for the "next latest and greatest," then you'll never have it. I say confirm and go for it.

Just be ready, because when you confirm, then you'll likely get access to the R1 Shop...and seeing all those new cars in there waiting for new homes gets really tempting. I'd bet you'll be in an R1S long before you think.

You should see if you can get it sooner rather than later. So, no don't wait.

Get the R1S now and within 10 miles of driving you'll laugh at yourself for considering waiting

I vote get it asap! No use waiting. Always will have new features coming or in Rivian’s case, deletion of features.

Thus far they have removed:
  • Branded speakers
  • Wood trim in 2nd row
  • 12v charger in dash
  • 12v charger in frunk
  • 2nd magnet on frink shelf
  • Option for yellow paint
And they have added:
  • $20,000 to the price

Based on Rivian's track record, if you wait the most likely outcome is that you will end up paying more for a worse vehicle.

I wouldn't wait.

We all have no idea when real hardware updates will happen on these vehicles but for now they are removing things to save costs as others have said.

I would say don't wait. The only reason I waiting for 2024 is I am buying my buddy R1T reservation and in 2024 the tax credit comes off the price of the car.

I am in the same boat and I am waiting until mid next year as there will be a softening of sales (as already confirmed by my Rivian advisor, highly unlikely higher prices, in fact, maybe a price reduction), new and better features will be available, better build process/control with the goal of minimizing build issues, upgrade in battery and software. I think as a Tesla owner (Model X), I am also interested in seeing how Rivian plans on implementing NACs and how crowded Tesla Superchargers become when you have everyone under the sun lining up to charge. (I use supercharging quite a bit).
I do prefer the Rivian over the Model X as I think it is a true SUV, just want to see more progress.

If you are ready to have a new car, there is no reason to wait. It isn’t as if as soon as you say ā€˜yes’ a R1S will be ready. There is additional wait after, until delivery. The longer you stall, because of FOMO, the longer it takes till delivery (as there is existing backlog of orders).

Rivian has already said they will provide owners an adapter at no charge. Rivians will not have NACS ports until ā€˜25. By then, unlikely any of the charging networks will even reach 25% adoption/conversion. All charging networks are for-profit businesses. And all for-profit businesses are cost sensitive. Many of there sites are still new to them. They will drag their feet on cost of converting to NACS, despite pledges to switch (and especially with Wall St. claiming declining demand for EVs). Once you have the adapter you will have ultimate flexibility. There are technical advantages to the standard, but to the consumer it doesn’t really factor. And the electrons don’t care what type of ports they flow through. Set emotions and FOMO aside, look objectively at the facts.

If Rivian said they are shifting to 800V and faster charging in 2024–and they have not—that would be a more rational reason to hold off. On the flip side, 800V will likely come as part of long rumored platform refresh, with fewer computers and whatever else they decide to delete—in order to increase profitability (like the 12V outlets, high-tone horn, etc.). Change is constant. If you fear change, you might as well sit it out indefinitely.
