@SadHill do you already have a transfer switch? I use the Anker f3800 as an inverter to power the house when the power goes out. I am sure there other ways to accomplish this but for the 2-3 times power goes down this works. https://www.anker.com/products/a1790111
no. Just use extension cords right now. But only lost power once since I have owned this. Will wait until it all comes out then will see what the dillio is.
thx though!!

No, that would be horrible. I don't want to be forced to do something against my will. I don't want the battery I purchased to move my truck to be used to power the grid.
While the original poster may have meant something different, the part that will be mandatory is that your vehicle will be capable of doing bidirectional charging.

are you able to continuously charge your Anker with the truck while using the Anker for the house? I have been considering getting one like this while using the truck to basically continuously trickle charge the battery.

Yes. The Anker has 1600 or 1000 watts of input. As luck would have it the Rivian has 1500 watts of output. the battery should qualify for the 30% tax credit so this was a good short term alternative until I install solar. But currently I pay .11 per kwh and installers in my area are $3 kwh and 10k for a battery so it is hard to justify a $50k solar installation

I don't like any mandates. But if you are correct, it just means the cost of BEVs are artificially inflated by unnecessary mandates instead of a mandate that forces me to use my private property for something I don't want to use it for. That is easier to swallow, even though it is still wrong. Forcing me to pay for something I don't want isn't a good thing.

Cost is negligible, and it has many potential uses in emergencies. Thou protests to much. I suppose you also object to cars having to be equipped with seat belts that you don't want.

The cost to install the equipment needed to send power from your vehicle to the grid isn't negligible. And the wear on the battery if it is being used daily to support the grid isn't negligible. I might be willing to VOLUNTARILY allow my car to be used to support the grid if, and only if, the compensation is profitable for me. Period.

For CCS it's just a software feature. This isn't like mandating a seat belt.

If you want to complain about something, please understand what it is you are complaining about before posting! There is plenty of information out there about BiDi charging and mandates being considered, for your reading pleasure.

The push to mandate BiDi charging isn't about taking your "personal freedom" by forcing you to help buffer the grid with your EV; the mandate has to do with requiring manufacturers to include the ability for a vehicle to do BiDi charging, if you so desire. The cost isn't zero to do BiDi charging, but that cost isn't coming from additional hardware in a vehicle, the cost is for the inverter and other changes to your electrical infrastructure in your house to convert the battery's DC back to AC at a sufficient amperage so you can run your house, or send excess power to the grid, which is not in any way mandated in any of the literature I've read.

RJ has already said that all Rivians are currently capable of doing BiDi charging (no additional vehicle cost if you own a Rivian), the issue becomes how to control the rate of discharge, what standards are required (utilities don't all have the same requirements, and your house most likely has a different configuration than your neighbor's house). Obviously, companies want to make sure your BiDi charging doesn't degrade the battery in the vehicle as they typically have extended warranty obligations on the batteries.

Your response is very reasonable. It is true I have not read about all the different versions of the mandates they are considering.

I am against mandates. I think it is better for the free market to develop features and functionality and offer it to us so we can buy it if we want to, or not. If it is offered, I might buy it. I might not. Certainly, after a storm the extra battery capacity to keep my house running would be a pretty great thing.

You really think any regulation is going to have you footing the bill for other's power? I think a big part of this is about smoothing out demand so we don't have peak and off-peak rates. If you charge at $0.15 and discharge some power when it's $0.30 -- you're likely to be paid for the effort. Any other scheme is going to be about as popular as stage 4 cancer.

I agree, unless the actions being regulated impact other people. I'm extremely opposed to people exhausting their vehicle emission into my air. In fact, it should be illegal by 2050 unless circumstances prevent the regulation from being feasible. Nothing sucks more than some clown who thinks the earth's atmosphere is his to shit on.

Just like Eddie dumping his shit into the municipal storm drain.

Yes, I do think they will try to force me to subsidize others against my will. They do it already in other areas.

And I seriously doubt the power company is going to pay me twice what they charge me for the same power. How do they make money if they buy it from me and sell it to someone else for half what they paid me for it? That doesn't make logical sense.

I totally disagree with your comparison. Our air is very clean and it isn't impacting my health at all. Unless you have some sort of medical condition, the same is true for you.

I will never support the kind of mandates you appear to be promoting. I believe in the free market and allowing individuals to have freedom over the choices they make. So I think it is time to agree to disagree. I hope you have a nice rest of your weekend.

Well, thankfully most of the world listens to scientists and action is being taken. If the market was left to govern itself, DDT and asbestos would be everywhere. Along with CFCs, 1980s levels of SO2 & NOx.

Do you really think diesels would have DEF/DPF systems with a free market?

Well, most of the world, except about half the US. And maybe a few in other petrol and/or far right countries.
