Something certainly changed. I’m still at 55% going on day 3. This has never happened before.

I saw this in the .47 notes and wondered why they mentioned the last sentence, as if to say when Gear Guard was off previous to .47 it did impact range?
  • When you activate Gear Guard, it now uses the high voltage battery more often to improve 12 V battery health, which reduces range while parked. When Gear Guard is off, or off at home, it does not have an impact on range.

@Gologic - please let us know what happened with your Gen2 Tri. Was it dead when you got back to the airport?

I can't believe this has come up with the Gen2. I believed the marketing material claiming the "lowest vampire drain in the industry", or something to that effect. It is a big reason I decided to wait for the Gen2 instead of getting a Gen1.

I cannot own a vehicle that will leave me stranded when I fly back from a long trip. If this is a common issue with the Gen2 R1s, I might have to reconsider my plan to purchase one. Crap. This sucks.
I replied elsewhere in the thread but, it appears the main issue was Gear Guard. I was parked near the main doorway in the ramp and probably had hundreds of people walking behind it. I would turn it off in the app, only to discover it was back on. The command to stay off eventually worked and my drain was next to nothing the remainder of the trip. Luckily, there is a huge Tesla station right by ORD.

I went back and checked my spread sheet. It turns out everything changed with .43. Up until that update, the 24/7 long term trip meter was consistently showing about plus 2 kWh used per day versus the daily meter that was reset everyday (basically showing just the energy used while driving, give or take). Since .43, both meters are showing pretty much the same daily energy usage. Clearly, VD is now being filtered out of the trip meter calculations. Surely there is still VD. It’s just not showing up in the trip meters. I like that! This makes any long term trip meter more relevant. They must have determined that once the vehicle is idle for whatever period, or maybe after being put into Park, any energy usage during that period would not be part of the trip meter data and calculations. At least, I hope this is what is happening.

Besides the trip meter/VD issue, I sure seem to be seeing significantly improved driving efficiency since software update .43 and maybe even .47. I find it odd that it is not uncommon that these mystery changes show up with the software updates and are never mentioned by Rivian. Of course, it could all just be my imagination ?

As for my current VD, I will have to find another way to determine If that has improved from the 2 kWh or 1.5% per day from prior to .43.

Edit: On further analysis, I am NOT seeing an improvement in driving efficiency with Software update .43 and likely not with .47. It has actually stayed about the same and seems to be very good, considering the colder weather.

ElectraFi is very handy for tracking everything.

I don’t have .47 yet (not a C+ subscriber) but VD did seem to improve slightly with .43. I don’t have quite as many sleep/idle cycles, but still way more than I used to. It looked much better until today, actually. Had like 30 sleep cycles the other day but now back up to the 60s ?‍♂

Interesting. You have a lot of idles. Here’s mine.

Yeah that’s what I was used to seeing. I have a service appointment still because it’s baffled Rivian in their remote diagnosis. Many people are saying it’s a sign of my 12v batteries going out. ? but it’s odd that it coincided with a software update from October when it started this behavior (.39 I think?)

I just wanted to chime in on this thread. I have a gen1 R1T for the past 3 years so I’m familiar with the phantom drain thing. I really haven’t noticed it since my trips to the airport have been short. 4 days tops; I have left gear guard on a few times.
My wife bought a duel motor R1S gen 2 two weeks before Christmas. As of now we are on vacation for 12 days. Last night my wife’s car gave us a warning that the battery is at 12%! We still have 3more days before we get back to the truck. So we are going to get back to a non working truck . We have been on the phone with Rivian and they said there is nothing they could do besides calling service when we get home.
When we parked the battery’s charge was @60%. She turned off gear guard via the app. According to Rivians rep you can’t turn off gear guard on the app, it will just come back on at some point, so this has to be where the drain is.
Now why have that as an option on the app if it doesn’t disable GG? And if the Car gets to a “said lvl” the car should just go into a deep sleep. Or better yet have an option in the app that totally shuts the vehicle down that works!
sorry for the long post, I should of shut the GG off on the main screen of the car. But now I am leaving my once in a lifetime trip to Hawaii to deal with getting a tow out of JFK so my family can enjoy the rest of their vacation. I love our Rivian but this really make me question our purchase.

My G1 Quad-LRG is going on almost 3 years now and 53k and still OG 12V batteries.
According to the Rivian mobile support tech in the video (16:53) via this thread only select VINs are impacted.
