Not sure what the point is in coming to an enthusiast forum to argue their enthusiasms are misplaced, but whatever, to each their own...

It's not available on the R2 yet, and as far as I know it hasn't been officially confirmed whether it will.
I believe it is officially confirmed that the garage door opener feature is coming in a software update. It just isn't available at launch. I could be wrong, but I thought I saw something official from Rivian at one point.

So about $60,000 for a car that does not have a feature used daily that a 21 year old car has....
By that logic, Rivian should also have a CD player and a cigarette lighter in the socket.

Good to know. But..... it says it's coming, but doesn't say it's the next update or even soon.
"Coming Soon"

" While not included in this release, the following features are expected soon via a subsequent OTA update:"

"Soon is an adverb meaning in the near future, within a short time, or promptly."

I posted this in another thread last year:

In April of 2023 Wassym said "in the next few quarters" aka "s00n"

Based on this, I'm unilaterally adding a third entry to Oxford dictionary definition of "soon":

soon (s00n) /soÍžon/
adverb

  1. in or after a short time.
"everyone will soon know the truth"
  2. used to indicate one's preference in a particular matter.
"I'd just as soon Tim did it"
  3. In Rivian speak, somewhere between a short time and as of November 2025, 30 months.
"Text messaging will s00n be included in an OTA update"

I'm not saying OP is a troll but they posted the exact same thing - word for word, bullet point for bullet point - in a Rivian group to which I belong on Facebook. Rather than trying to be informative, I think they're just trying to get a rise out of people. Wait... I guess I AM saying they're a troll.

  • The Rivian infotainment software features that will be missing at launch. Never ever buy a product predicated on the promise of future software features. Also, if these basic features from the R1 can't make it to the R2 by launch, it'll take even longer for software features to be released based on customer feedback on the R2.
    • Rivian Assistant
    • Camping Mode
    • Garage Door support
    • Climate Hold
    • Pet Mode
    • Gear Guard will be present but with limited functionality.
I will just say that "missing software features now" will be irrelevant if they add them by the time your vehicle would arrive. Sure, it's annoying for the very earliest buyers, but that seems to be very low volume at the moment. Unless you were offered a "receive it in the next month" purchase slot, I'd be willing to bet that most if not all of the items on this list will be resolved by the time you would have received your vehicle anyway.

The others? Some of the complaints are borderline petty (lack of 3rd party accessories? Nearly every one you mention is available for R1 now - R2 is a brand new model, it will take time for accessory makers to come out with similar for it,) some are perfectly legit. I would greatly prefer my vehicles to have CarPlay/Android Auto, but Rivian's infotainment is "good enough" that it's only a minor inconvenience not a dealbreaker.

Or maybe they're short-selling Rivian stock.

I stopped reading here.

  • Above all, the lack of CarPlay/Android Auto is the biggest factor in my decision to cancel.
What did you expect? Rivian and Tesla have been pretty open about owning you in their ecosystem. Yes, the Rivian UI doesn't have the features you get with Android Auto/Carplay. If that's important, you are looking at the wrong car ,

FYI, Google owns Waze and it's already well incorporated into Google Maps.
But it’s actually really not.. there are so many features inherent in Waze that are not ported or in the API from google maps.

but it would never be a deal breaker for me.

I have a reservation and am going to be cross shopping a few vehicles. I have a 2024 Q8 Etron. Great car, a bit older technology. Except for possible some 2 track driving for fly fishing, I won’t be going off road. I’m more interested in range, handling, charging, etc. Thus far, The BMW iX3 is leading with over 400 mi of range, fast, and good handling. I’ll drive the Volvo and Q6 as well. The Volvo has what I want, but only in the P12 version which will be too expensive I believe.
The OP has a litany of complaints that don’t bother me much. My prior Equinox EV didn’t have Apple Car Play, nor does my Audi. Colors choices are of course subjective. I’m really hoping Rivian has a hit here.
