I’ve read through other threads and I’m on the cusp of buying an old Rivian charger at a discount but I’m debating also the Tesla universal charger. I was going to buy one of these no questions asked but figured I’d ask on here for any recommendations considering my current situation. I’ve heard some of these thinner cables heat up quickly so just wanted to be sure.
The charger will be installed outside exposed to the elements and where I live in Miami it rains a lot throughout the year. Appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

This thread can be helpful in making your decision.

Like you, I debated about the 2 but ultimately went with the Rivian EVSE ("wall charger"). Below is how I arrived at my decision.

Exactly the same reasons why I got the RIvian EVSE ("wall charger"). Mine has Oct 2023 as date of manufacture and it is the new version with the thinner cord and slightly updated handle. I think the newer version started in Aug 2023. The Rivian EVSE charges instantaneously without the slight delay ("handshake") with the Tesla EVSE. You only have to use one app for both vehicle and EVSE. Only having to deal with one company as to troubleshooting and warranty claims is also a big factor in my decision to get the Rivian EVSE.

I have a Wallbox and a ChargePoint flex. Both work great and no issues. The Wallbox has been outside for 3 years and no issues whatsoever. Snow, cold, heat, all good.

I bought a Rivian charger in 2022 along with my truck. Both live outside under plenty of rain, and I haven't had a problem with the charger cables or anything else when charging my truck.

lol how do you forget about it? Which one did you get the standard $399 one?
Ya, just the bum basic charger. I forget about it because it's very simple and has zero issues since install. I also have solar and it works with that very well-pulling from solar primarily and grid as a back up. I just plug the car in and it does its thing.

Universal wall connector us the way to go. It's future proof and can charge any EV. Plus later on if you decide to install a second EV charger you can save on electrical upgrades by using Tesla Power Share. Here is a link & my setup:

I have the Rivian Wall Charger at home and it's installed in an outside setting fully exposed to the elements, including direct sun. I bought it because of the price (early order discount). It seems to be holding up well (had for 1 year so far), but there is nothing special about it... all the functionality is in the Rivian mobile app and would work the same with any brand. I also have a Grizzl-E charger (the "dumb one", not wifi enabled) at a 2nd home location that is exposed to more extreme winter storms and temperatures. The Grizzl-E is a tank! metal, not plastic housing. I bought it because it was relatively inexpensive and the waterproofness of the housing is fantastic. I am very happy with it and I have the same ability to set charging schedules, start/stop charging via the mobile app as I do with my Rivian Charger. Given how charging has evolved in the last year (NACS for all... s00n), if I had to buy one today, I think I might go with the Tesla Universal since I plan to have my CCS/J-1772 R1S for a long time and maybe my next family vehicle will be an R-2 with NACS port. Tom Mologney's "State of Charge" charger reviews are kinda crazy, but good. Check those out for the ones you are considering so you are informed before purchase. Good luck!

I also have a 40 amp Grizzl-E dumb charger. This thing is overbuilt (and that’s an understatement). It looks like it’s designed for an Arctic Outpost somewhere. It’s not flashy or filled with fancy options but I expect it to outlive me lol.

I’ve had a Godiag EV-B04 for a while, used on my Zero originally and now on the Rivian. It was $100 on eBay. Works great, with a super simple pushbutton to limit current before I start charging. I’ve never understood wasting hundreds on permanent chargers.

I have a ChargePoint Flex and it’s great, and well reviewed.

My issue is the multiple charger situation and how ChargePoint doesn’t allow it on one account. They’ve known about this for years too it seems.

My FIL just got his Rivian yesterday, and ordered two because I said how good mine has been, and now he’s going to have to setup a 2nd account for the charger at the cabin.

We’ll be adding an R2, and I’m going to have to use another email to setup a 2nd account with the 2nd charger. Seems like an easy fix but here we are lol.
