Wondering if anyone else experiences this.. When charging at home (with a Tesla charger) my R1S will charge at a reasonable rate for the first hour and then will drop often by half for the remaining charge time… Any insights?

Dropped my charging rate to 40A and R1T now charges at 23 miles/hour with no throttling/derating. So charging at a lower amperage ends up charging faster because starting at 48A throttles/derates to a much lower rate and doesn’t ramp back up. Go figure.

UPDATE: So dropping my charge rate to 34 has solved the issue.. If I try to go to 36, problem returns.. 34 is the sweet spot for me! Thanks again everyone!
Yeah I had to drop to 36 amps to find my sweet spot.

I’m surprised how many of you find this acceptable. I have two chargers in my house, one is a hardwired Rivian charger on 60A breaker and other is a Autel that’s wired to a 14-50 socket (setup for 40A max).

I’ve used that 14-50 plug for our old Tesla mobile charger for 3 years with no throttling issues, even in the heat of summer. Our Kia EV6 charges on the Autel now and never had any throttling (no issues running at constant 9.3kw). I’ve had our Rivian with the Rivian wall charger for almost year and a half with no throttling issues until recently.

I’m getting the same “warm plug” warning. I drove a long round trip today and charged it when I got back. Did the usual 11kW for exactly one hour then drops to 7.3kw. I’ve seen it dip lower other times too. It stopped charging for a few hours due to the weird way it handles my TOU plan. I just manually restarted charging and it immediately shows the “charging slowed” message for “warm plug” still. Plug feels room temperature to the touch. My garage is well insulated and rarely gets super hot. Right now it’s at 80 degrees F in there.

This throttling has burned me twice now. Last night was the second time I set it to charge to 95% for a long trip today and it only got to 87% by the time we left early this morning due to the throttling. ?‍♂

Mine was doing the same. I took it in and Rivian changed the charge port on the truck and that fixed the problem even in hot weather it doesn't reduce the charge.

After successfully charging my Rivian R1S four times with the new Tesla Universal Wall Connector, I can confidently say it's solved my charging issues. The Rivian used to downgrade after 30 minutes, but not anymore. Also, the Tesla to CCS adapter on the UWC doesn't overheat like the Lectron Tesla to J1772 adapter did.

I'm having this exact issue with a Rivian Wall Charger (dedicated 60A circuit). Started happening this summer, don't remember it happening last summer. It's frustrating because we charge overnight, and under our TOU plan, the cheapest "off-peak" hours are only 12 am to 6 am, so we need to maximize charging during that window. Because of the throttling, there are mornings when our SOC is less than our standard 80% unless we keep charging outside of off-peak hours.

Same issue here. Went back and noticed it started dropping in early June. Usually 2-4 hours and then it drops from 11 to 8. I have a service appointment scheduled and they said I wasn't eligible for mobile, due to the charging issue and needing to plug into a SC diagnostic unit. They clearly have all the data and it seems like they know what it might be. Especially since there are others experiencing the same thing. I actually went without knowing for months, so by that fact and also the fact that people don't always post, leads me to believe there are many more. I went an entire year with no issues, before June.

My buddy uses my R1T's oem charger for his rav4 prime in the morning then we switch the cars out when he's done. His car gets throttled the same as mine. The charger is inside a non-climate controlled building but it was under 80° at the time this screenshot was taken and had been ramping up from about 65°. The handle is never even warm but the plug at the wall and the in line box get quite hot. Not too hot to hold on to but very warm.

Have had Lectron adapters in the past and never experieced heat issues even with my new Vortex Plug.

That's great to hear, are you running a Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 at 48amps, and using the Lectron Tesla to J1772 adapter to connect to your R1T/S?

So update on mine. Submitted a ticket to Rivian charger support. They’re being extremely unreasonable with this! Not sure how much research they’ve done in the background, but they’ve determined based on my description that the charger needs replaced. But…since I self installed it and didn’t use a licensed electrician, they’re saying my warranty is void and they won’t do anything!

This is my second charger since the first one was DOA (had a communication board issue). I went through troubleshooting with them back in March 2023 when I got it and they replaced it for me with no issues even though I self installed it. They quoted in the instructions where it says warranty is only valid if installed by a licensed electrician, but that blurb was added in the May 2023 revision of the instructions, well after my original installation and purchase.

What sucks is they even offered to pay to have qmerit install my replacement for me and I was going to let them do that, but qmerit kept saying they couldn’t find anyone to come out to me to install (even though I’m in Colorado Springs which is only an hour from Denver). ?‍♂

I told them to escalate my issue to supervisor but haven’t heard anything back. They know this is a defective charger design and is not an issue related to the installation (which was permitted and inspected BTW). No matter what happens, I think I’ll be selling this charger and switching to a Tesla universal charger.

The good news is I haven’t seen it derate since the last truck update. So maybe it isn’t the charger after all. Or since it is cooler out it doesn’t do it at temps below 80??

This is just awful customer service and now starting to make me reconsider my R2 preorder. It’s the small things that add up and tick me off….

I also had Rivian charger issues (60amp circuit). I only had to drop to 44amps to get it to work without dropping the charge rate. Our MachE charges at its peak rate, no drops, but the handle does get warm (not hot). Our charger was installed by our electrician (also put in the subpanel). It worked fine for a long time, so was it an update to the truck or did some connections loosen up?

I genuinely think it is a heat issue... Warm days I have an issue cool days (and nights) I do not.. That is really the only variable in my particular situation....

I think you’re right, but many of us didn’t have this issue until this summer. my garage gets to about 80F max in the summer so I can’t imagine how bad it must be for someone with a charger outside in the desert!

I think either these chargers have something that has degraded over the last 1-2 years, or more likely a software update to the truck and/or charger itself is now “protecting” it from the bad design better.

Either way, it’s still a design issue, which they apparently have already addressed with the latest version of the charger.

Can you schedule charging just like I do with my Teslas from time to time when I tell it to charge to whatever percentage, even 95%, by a given time? No change?
