Rivian R1S Gen 2
Just so I'm clear, sorry for the ignorance ...

if I understand correctly, this is an unsanctioned implementation of comma_ai on Rivian R1 using a standalone camera, correct? If so, what is the objective of doing this development work? Is it to provide a competitive solution to Driver+ that works on any street (in the short term)? Or, is the objective to get Rivian to adopt comma_ai in favor of (and drop their) proprietary solution?

Well I'm not on YouTube but I did talk to him myself. Even got a free hat and bought a new Comma 3X on live stream!

What do you mean you are not “on YouTube”? Pretty easy to access and free!

I have a Youtube channel but I don't upload much to it. Maybe I will at some point but, point being I'm not a famous Youtuber. But the info I'm providing is straight from the horses mouth.

Rivian isn't going to abandon their own Driver+ and adopt Comma AI (although that would be an incredible improvement). Comma devices run Openpilot, a technically open source self-driving software that gets ported to new models in exactly this way - by community members and freelancer coders porting over the access for particular vehicles. Rivian incentivizes a lot of the development via a bounty system -

https://comma.ai/leaderboard

None of this needs to be approved of or sanctioned by Rivian. See all the other brands and vehicles that Comma has worked on for 5+ years or more. The only company that officially supports Comma is Aptera.

It even works for some others not listed here, like Tesla.

If comma.ai can do that level of self-driving on Gen1, why can't Rivian do that with its own equipment? Is it purely the camera quality thats limiting Rivian or I guess it's software as well? But wondering if its just because Rivian isn't investing in Gen1 Driver+.

This is not a good look for Rivian.

It's unclear if it's just because they don't have the talent to do better, they were buying ADAS from Mobileye and aren't able to make meaningful changes, or just don't give a damn about improving G1 anymore. Probably all of the above. Unlikely to be a hardware issue. The Comma is based on a five year old smartphone with few decent cameras which they can sell for $1k and make a profit. It's not exactly high end stuff on the hardware side.

At the end of the day, it doesn't much matter because we can solve the problem for $1k and have the second best ADAS on the road. Comma.ai has a track record of delivering consistent and meaningful updates to Openpilot and from what I hear through the rumor mill (taken with salt,) some awesome new stuff is already well into testing. But even if it never gets any better than it is today, it's a killer system that is the best $1k you will ever spend on your Rivian. I've fallen in love my R1T all over again now that it has a great ADAS.

How did you manage to get it for only $1000 and how do I?

The main issue remaining is the set speed one. That will give Comma longitudinal control. Comma.Ai has given a $1k bounty for the developer that solves this first. There is an additional one being setup via Go Fund Me. If you want to contribute to help incentivize finding a fix, you can go here. Once this is solved it will be a major leap forward. Right now Comma 3X relies on using Rivian's ACC for speed control.

Go here to contribute. It also tells more about it. It was started by a Rivian Club member in Texas.

Not saying it's definitely not legit but I also can't speak for the legitimacy of that Gofundme.

Anyone wanting to support Lukas can buy his harness instead of the one from Comma. Yes, it's $150 more, but it helps fund the development. You will get it about a month sooner. Then just buy the Comma 3X and 8 Degree mounts separately from the Comma website. You'll also need a 10 ft. USB-C extension cord from Amazon.

His contact info is on the site too if you just wanted to send him some money.
