Good morning Rivian Community:

It may seem like a strange request, but I am looking at recommendations for a cooler for my use scenario, or opinions if I even need one:

1) My wife likes to go to multiple places when we shop and is always worried that some of the items will either spoil or, if frozen, defrost. So we end up going back to the house multiple times to drop stuff off.

2). Is there a REASONABLY priced cooler I could put some place in the truck that I could store things in so as not to worry?

3). What are your thoughts about the size needed (family of three when we shop) and if it is best to get one with two different cooling areas to have one for frozen and one for cold.

Best

Here's how I'd approach this:
  • Determine how big a cooler you need for shopping AND if you're likely to use it for other things as well. You probably have at least one old-school Igloo cooler around already - Just put a couple of ice packs in it and take it the next time you go shopping. Those types of trips are typically not spontaneous so you can plan ahead. You don't want to drop money on an AC/DC cooler only to find that it's not big enough.
  • If you're buying for 3 people it means you can keep the cooler on the back seat of your R1T which opens other options:
    • Engage Pet Mode while you're shopping to keep the interior cool
    • You can get a Thermoelectric cooler (versus a compressor cooler) which will cool up to 35 or so degrees below ambient temperature. Then you need to decide how long you need to keep things cold. If you buy a lot of frozen stuff AND live an hour from where you're shopping you'll want something that cools enough to hold that.
I just got back from a Costco run and I just threw the frozen stuff into a large insulated bag (no ice pack) for the 20-minute ride home. It was fine!

Do you have a tonneau cover? If so, get one of the Yeti clones that is short enough to fit under the lid.

I have Yeti-branded one (it was on sale, don’t judge) and it fits perfectly.

I do have the tonneau cover... and no judging... I have quite the collection of Yeti... what one do you use?

Not sure if you need the back seat space for people when shopping, but just about any cooler will work if you keep it in the cabin and turn on pet mode when you stop. I actually did this today, and put my frozen items in a little Coleman. It's probably 30 years old and couldn't have cost me much. Everything was still frozen over an hour later. If I were planning such a purchase, I'd flip up the back seat and measure what fits above the storage cubbies and tuck a cooler in there. Just keep in mind that a cooler will be more efficient the fuller it is, so I wouldn't oversize too much.

Keep in cabin with climate control running while parked, use cooler bag, and/or throw in frunk with a bag of ice.

Not sure if it fits your use case, but I can recommend the Rugged Road cooler. I recently purchased the 65, which fits under the tonneau. And another member here reported the 45 fits nicely in the frunk.
Just missed a sale unfortunately…

I got the ICECO GO20. I really like it, plus it doubles as my everyday garage refrigerator.

Selling my Yeti Tundra Haul because it's too big to fit under the tonneau. Decided to get the Iceco 37QT VL35Pro. It's the largest sub $600 cooler that will fit under the tonneau which means I lose out on some space from the Yeti, but I look at it as no ice packs etc so works out to be similar. Of course I ordered it like a clown last week. I managed to get 12% off rather than the 20% currently offered.

I do the same thing (I'm the shopper in the house). I use typical soft coolers in the back seat, and leave pet mode on. Works great. I would not use the bed or frunk as they are ovens.

We have this Euhomy electric fridge/freezer:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08N63CSH5

It comes with a 120V and a 12V cord. It fits under the tonneau cover and also fits (barely) in the frunk. Great, if your R1T still has the 12V outlet.

I like that it has bluetooth so I can check on the cooler to see that it is still working.

Keeping an electric cooler in the frunk with it baking and 110 degrees outside might not be the best idea, but it would work well for a grocery run.

Make Costco your first and only stop ?
I live 1-2 hours away but it's not an issue since they sell coolers, ice, and tires.

While not the best option for your shopping, I got this the other day when I overbought on ice cream. So far I've be really happy with it for general use and it folds away easily.

I usually used the cold bags and pack things together. Even just wrapping in a travel blanket or pile of will help a lot. Or that Yeti collection you have.
