Front Drive Unit Replacement-Who’s had it done?

I live in Northern Arizona, cold winter temperatures and snow. I saw a definite correlation between cold/warm temperatures (trips to Phoenix and summer heat) and the gear lash. While not an automotive engineer my belief is the heat thins the lubricant and also expands the metal changing the gear tolerances. But again just a guess on my part.

?‍ mine was making a terrible “whine” and they said something failed within it and replaced it.

Same here. Had a new “whine” sound coming from front right at approx 58k miles. No issues other than a different sound than normal. Rivian replaced the front right control unit and its been working great ever since. Currently at 61k.

I disagree. Forums skew strongly to the negative. I think I’m more the norm.

I'd say this is accurate. The vehicle is new and Rivian is going to require hammering out the bugs. I'm not mad at them about it.

5K miles here and have the same experience.

If you were the norm the queue for service wouldn’t be months long.

This doesn't indicate overall reliability as there can be multiple causes for the service backups. Slow service times, Inefficient scheduling, parts availability issues, and insufficient tech/ service centers can cause long service queues without too many vehicles having issues.

Gear lash. I suppose there is a less than perfect analogy to a traditional ICE vehicle where the play in a universal joint on the drive shaft increases as the universal joint ages and is about to fail. Visits to the SC and driving around with a tech in the R1T really did not show the severity of the problem. I documented my gear lash by jacking up the driver's side front tire, rotating it left to right and right to left several times, then pushing (rotating) the tire in and out several times, all the while recording the play and sounds. I then lowered the tire and did the same thing with the passenger side front tire. Significant visible play and clanking noises.

They called yesterday and said that it was the front drive unit. Has anyone had theirs replaced and if so, for what reason. I feel like a warning would go off if it truly was failing but i dont know for sure.

I had a system fault error (or something like that) on day 2 of owning my Gen 2 R1S. They swapped out the front drive unit, no issues since. That was about 6 months ago.
