I don't think there is an updated "V2" halfshaft. I believe the difference in part number is based on if there is a single or double drive unit in the front.

Single drive unit halfshaft is PT00087074-D

Dual drive unit halfshaft is PT00055489-G

This PT00055489-G shaft has been used on Gen1 Quads for at least a year or two.

This is my halfshaft noise today. 70 degrees out. Sounds absolutely terrible in the cabin. And its not just noise, the whole truck feels loose and sloppy when this is happening.

Turn the sound up, bass down. Ignore the dash rattle that features in the video. The halfshafts almost sound like a low growl/rattle. At the end when the truck is coming to a stop its really bad.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
So PT00087074-D is not the current half shaft?

I'm seeing a different part number on recent service order sheets.

PT00055489-G is the new part #?

Does the R1T and R1S have different part #s?

Quad versus dual?

Interesting. Mine goes in next week for half-shafts, I'll get some pics of before and after.

Yep - identical on our Quad. Just reached out to service manager. No new PN’s or redesign. He offered to swap half axels and hubs, that’s about it.

I had all that done on my Quad. Didn't fix my rattling and loose suspension.

The only fix for the chattering is packing grease in the bearings and that only lasts for a few hundred miles. Unless we get new half-shafts it's just the way it is.

My first Rivian was a LE QM R1T. It had all the usual “repairs” for this problem non of which lasted more than a few hundred miles. Finally, in desperation, I demanded Rivian replace the vehicle. They, after much slow walking, offered a new QM which I refused. After further “negotiations” Rivian replaced the QM with a DM as I originally requested. While I only have 6,000 miles on the new vehicle I am very happy with it. Having had both the QM and the DM I really don’t miss the added performance of the QM and definitely don’t miss the numerous five hour round trips to the SC.

You don't have the rattles in your new DM like in my video above?

Its now just a loose rattle can that is very cumbersome to drive, at best.
You've lead an incredibly sheltered life.

I'd put the chances at less than 0.000001% that RJ hasn't lost some sleep over these damn things. It's the weakest point in the vehicle.
I've yet to break one. What's your definition of weak?

For the record, one of my original justifications of selling my Hummer EV in early 2022 and keeping my R1T was around the drivetrain noise difference between the vehicles. The Hummer had a significant geartrain lash clunk and the R1T was otherwise silent. My R1T is still not as bad as the Hummer was at 4k miles on the odo vs 36k on the R1T.

I'm wondering if a lot of the folks who complain a lot have always driven automatic ICE vehicles, where there's almost always forwards pressure on the drivetrain. My R1T isn't that different from most of the manual vehicles I've driven in this regard.

I came from Tesla and was an early adopter. Went through Model S issues and then the fiasco of the Model 3 early build issues. Before those I drove only Toyota Hybrids. The last my daily driver that was an ICE was in 2006. So I come from 20 years of Hybrids and EVs, always trying to adopt the latest and greatest.

Anyway, this feels weird. I'm not really one to list my car driving qualifications. I think the disconnect is that we talk about the rattle and slop as if it just a sound. In my video above you just hear the clatter from the halfshafts (I assume those are the culprits). What you don't see is what my main issue is: The rattle, looseness, and slop are what you feel. It honestly feels like the front end of the truck is going to come apart. The steering wheel pulls all over the place. I drive those same roads in my friend's Jeep, and it feels solid and smooth. My son drives a 2007 Lexus hybrid hand-me-down with totally shot OG shocks. That feels much better than my R1T. In fact, it only feels bad in my Rivian.

If it were only sound, I'd crank the radio and try to forget.

Good info about the Hummer EV. I just wonder if some of these parts can't handle the weight of these vehicles over time. That Hummer really tips the scales.

Interesting... I didn't know this was an issue. My Gen2 R1T is in for service right this moment for some minor fit and finish stuff that needed fixed from initial delivery. Prior to drop off, the service center reach out and asked if they could add a half shaft inspection to the visit, to which I agreed. Curious why they are doing preemptive inspections...
