Improved AC (colder and stronger) after OTA 22.23

Yes, I agree that a noisy A/C compressor is a problem and it should not sound like that and Rivian should fix it for you if it does. I'm just saying this seems to be a vehicle-specific problem as opposed to something that is inherent to the design and therefore happens to everyone. The changes they've been making to the A/C software over the past several OTA updates seems to have made this show up in some vehicles where it didn't happen before.

I think with it being a new problem, it's going to take time for them to track down the true cause and work out a proper remediation. They probably hope it can be fixed in software by changing the speed ramp of the compressor, because that would be an easier and cheaper fix. But I tend to think it's probably a "bad" compressor, since older R1 vehicles never saw this and because we know Rivian has had to frantically work to deal with supply chain issues to keep production up and costs down. It seems likely to me that they have a different or additional supplier of that part that may not be making them as well as the original supplier. I would expect this to be fixed on a per-vehicle basis, only for those people who are experiencing the problem.

Since the update there is a noise coming from the frunk area that sounds like a fan out of balance but not the loud compressor noise others have described.

It seems that many of the current EV’s feature glass roofs. They’re nice to look at but they’re heavy and complicates AC. Maybe it’s cheaper and easier for the factory?

I would think that it had to be more expensive to produce and install the glass roof in the R1T than to just have a solid metal roof. The glass roof is also somewhat counter productive when it comes to air conditioning the cabin. Putting a panoramic glass roof in a pick-up truck is like unto installing a screen door in a submarine.

The first three things that we did to our R1T were:

1. Cover the glass roof. The AC works much better and you can see your phone screen.
2. Remove the aero wheel covers. The truck looks much better.
3. Remove and store the camp speaker. This takes 5# of useless weight out of the truck.

I can only compare the two vehicles I currently own.

Of course, the R1T doesn’t have a sun shade across the glass roof, but my Audi Q5 has one. I’ve never been able to stand having that shade retracted in 10 years of ownership. The heat gain and direct glare from the sun are just too much. At night is nice to retract and open the roof.

In contrast, I’ve not given the R1T a second thought. No direct glare from the sun, and no hotter than the Q5 with the panoramic roof shade closed.

The Audi’s HVAC has never been loud, the truck‘s has been very loud since the update, but I’m confident they’ll get it “dialed in”.

Keeping the aero covers on likely has a more significant effect than removing 5lbs ?

I agree with your first statement - my point was that others do it and I don’t think any issues with Rivian is necessarily caused by the pano roof.

On the second point, I think there’s enough anecdotal evidence to raise an eyebrow, but certainly not enough data to say it’s a widespread problem. I think the general consensus is that it IS a problem - they should not sound like that. Whether it’s 2 cars or 2000.

Regardless, here in Texas, if I were to park my car outside it would be 130 degrees inside whether it had a pano or solid roof. ?

True dat! Too much glass all around. However, an aftermarket sunshade makes cooling the cabin MUCH easier AND makes it easier to keep cool. It was a pleasant surprise after I installed my sunshade.

FWIW, the UV rejection in the glass roof seems to be better than my previous Tesla Y. This is coming from my scientific testing of feeling how hot the top of my head gets. I did tint the front two windows as well as do UV rejection for my windshield.

Just downloaded the new OTA 22.23...I've noticed huge improvement in cooling down the T when the interior gets super hot while sitting locked up in the sun...and maintaining the temperature has also improved..Seems like they've adjusted the compressor and fan speeds....THANK YOU RIVN!!!

I finally gave in and had mine tinted last week. So far, it has been aso much cooler in the car when driving in this Dallas heat.
