Going to get a main panel upgrade and finally have two ev chargers installed at my house. I have a tesla model S and an R1T. We park both outside the garage but directly outside garage.

1). How does it work if you install in the garage? Does the charging cable just run under the garage door?

2). If it does, do you risk damaging the cable when the garage door closes?

3). What would everyone's preference be.... to install inside garage or outside?

Best

Chargers are rated for outside. If you can get a cover then that would be good but not needed. Mine is outside getting rain and snow and it doesn’t hurt it. I wouldn’t run it under the door. Plus on the very extremely rare chance of a fire then outside is better. But seriously, put it on whatever side of the door you’re charging your vehicle.

I have two 1 x 3 boards that I lay on the garage floor and the charging cord is on the edge. The boards protect the cord from crush and seal the entire length of the garage to keep small rodents out.

I park my R1T outside on the driveway but elected to install the charger inside the garage to shield it from direct sunlight where it can heat up during charging. I have plastic flooring that's 5/8" thick so I just cut a 1"x6" groove on the flooring for the cable to pass through. When charging is finished, I put the plastic piece back to cover the groove. If you don't have flooring on the garage floor, just use 1x3" boards like @LTD in CBTS did as above to protect the cable and keep rodents out. Keeping the charger inside is best.

I would go with an indoor installation and a pass-through. EV cable theft is on the rise, but maybe this isn't a concern where you live. I definitely would not crush the cable with the door. It might work for a while but I suspect the inner insulation could be compromised over time.

I have one of the clipper creek dual cord chargers. The main charger body is in the garage, where one cable goes to our tesla. The other is routed along the side and floor of the garage, just to the side of the garage door via a little cutout in the frame. The cable doesn't have any pressure on it, there is a clip that keeps it from moving around in the passthrough, and I have some foam around it to maintain a seal into the garage. I then have a dock and cable holder mounted on the outside for the Rivian.

I have a charger outside in Northern WI, not really an issue you'll deal with, but i just had to melt the bottom of the cable out of 2" of ice.

Why don't you park in the garage? I wouldn't install a charger outside unless I had no other option

I opted to install inside my garage since I didn't want the charger on the sunny/hot side of our house or to deal with having to build any enclosures for rain, snow, etc.

I use my garage as a gym so I did a similar setup to Gdorff here where the cable is routed out through a port hole in the garage door that fits the cable perfectly:

https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...2-home-charger-installs-here.7940/post-271141

Then in the inner part of the outside of the garage door I have a J1772 holder that I can click the handle into when it's not charging.

They make cable pass throughs that will protect your charging cable from the garage door sitting on it. I don’t know which are the best, but they work like this one:

This does not work with the Rivian charge cables. Ask me how I know…

FWIW I just shut the garage on the cable and not seems to be holding up just fine
so do I— I get a small indentation, but very much feels okay?
