Functionally, I'm sure it'll be great. But people don't buy cars strictly based on how practical they are and how well they function. You should see the number of Land Rover Defenders and Mercedes G-wagons around where I live without a spec of dirt on them. Or Ford Raptors for that matter. My bicycle is dirtier than those cars I see around. I think Lucid got the look wrong; internally, some of the engineers called it an AMG R-wagon which apparently didn't go over well with the head of design. And the R-wagon didn't have a long life.
Classic, when I test drove the Air they were keen to point out that the Mercedes S-Class was their competition rather than the Model S. I think this is reason why they haven’t done too well because it’s certainly not an S-Class for either the driver or passengers.

Now that I’ve seen the R-Class I can’t unsee it ???

Lucid looks too nice on the inside. Wouldn't want kids eating and drinking in it. Wouldn't want dirty feet on those seats. Wouldn't want babies spitting up (or worse) on my nice seats. Wouldn't want my dog's claws or dirty paws in the backseat. Not saying the R1S isn't just as nice, and I certainly wouldn't want it messed up either. I am saying it looks like the R1S would be more durable because it is intended for more utility. Having a tailgate doesn't make the Lucid a true Sport Utility Vehicle.

Lucid brand looks like an "adult" car that I'd cringe on going to the messy sandy beach, or snowy mountains, with the grandkids. If I had both a Lucid and an R1S, I'd use the R1S about 5 times more and mainly use the Lucid for shopping, driving to church, and taking adult trips. (Kind of a waste.)

The original question was regarding consideration of the Lucid vs Rivian. My answer is it depends on your needs and usage. That's just my opinion.
Took the words right out of my mouth, I kind of like Lucid, looks like they would be a comfy ride, especially for long-distance but there's no way I would want kids or pets in there without covering the entire interior in canvas.

Hmm.. I'd be a good luxury taxi to replace Escalades for airport runs?

Having a r1s quad and driving for a week what I’ve noticed about the air that I hope is fixed on the gravity,
1) as others have said the driving dynamics of the lucid air are wonderful. But nobody says this…maybe / hopefully their are settings for some of this
A) the rear visibility in the lucid air is awful.
B) I’m an audiophile. With tidal and meridian in my r1s I think the stereo when setup correctly is great. The tidal Implementation in the air is awful and does not offer full functionality as it does in the rivian
C) the stereo in the lucid is Dolby atmos and it is surprisingly bad. The front speakers try to reproduce low sounds that they are not capable of and sound hollow or broken. For me the tidal audio is so bad in the lucid I wouldn’t buy the car unless it is fixed.
D) the lucid air doesn’t hold the car like the Rivian, After driving the lucid you really appreciate what Rivian has done here. If you stop on a slight hill with the lucid you have to quickly put your foot on the brake as it will roll forward or backward.
E) the lucid is buggy software wise. Have had to reset due to screens randomly going black etc.
F) your first few day experience in the lucid is wow this is nice, but over time their are annoyances that crop up that really shouldn’t be their that are not present in the Rivian. The Rivian to me feels like an apple cohesive product and the lucid feels like more like an android.
With the above said. The lucid air has amazing trunk and front trunk room.

Funny, whether people like it or not a minivan shaped vehicle is the most practical vehicle on the road. Period. That whole soccer mom stigma you can thank chrAPysler and equally as crap ford for that.

The new Gravity will likely check way more boxes than the R1S and could end up being a far better family vehicle for most shopping in this price range.

The R1S isn't a good option for those with rear facing car seats. To be fair, it's not that type of car, or is it? If so, then that's a bigger shame on Rivian for not designing it properly. RJ even mentioned that having kids himself, that the cars were designed with that in mind to accommodate families, but you've got the R1S/T that are the absolute worst for rear facing car seats lol.

The Tesla Model X gives you better room up front with rear facing seats in the 2nd row and the KIA EV9 is the best for front passenger leg room in the same scenario. Could the new Gravity come on top for new families with rear facing car seats? We'll know soon enough.

At half the price range you've got the new KIA Carnival MPV (yea yea, minivan, but at least they're trying to kill that stigma and actually made it look like a SUV), as a great example of making a minivan look like a SUV, which is moving in the right direction.

Only thing that sucks is that it's not an EV, yet. Instead it comes in the 3.5l V6 and in a Hybrid Trim.

This is the previous body design, but I've always thought the roof pop up was neat. You have way more vertical room in a minivan than the R1S, let alone a traditional SUV that's very skinny in comparison.

I agree that car seat accommodation is one of Rivian's biggest misses. I'm still incredibly surprised that Rivian didn't integrate seatbelts directly into the R1S' second row seats to allow the seats to slide forward while car seats are strapped in. As it stands now, there is no practical way to access the third row with car seats installed in the second row. This is a deal breaker for some families.

Man, I like the look of the Gravity. It’s something I would consider except that I want the off road capabilities of the R1.

Yup, and a reason why my wife hates it whenever she has to be between the kids in the back seat. Sitting between two car seats in second row is no fun. I don't know who came up with this grand idea in Rivian team.

Just give us captains chairs and the R1S will be the best.

I also made this detail in recent survey I received from Rivian.

I’ve been shopping the R1S, MX, and Gravity. I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old, both rear facing at the moment

The Gravity does intrigue me, but we likely need a vehicle before it’s released. From the info I could find, it looks top notch. I like the looks.

The R1S is our top option, but we are really disappointed in the lack of captain chairs as an option.

The Model X has been the clear winner for us in accommodating our girls with the captain chairs. If I could option a white on white MX with captain chairs and keep the tax credit, I’d of pulled the trigger on one already.

As it sits, we may be waiting on a new R1S.

Totally agree it's too bad R1S is lacking captain chair offering. The 2nd row design is not good, heavy and klunky to move, and the seat is too soft and flimsy (cushion springs are too soft, so it feels like I'm sitting in a fold up chair).

I like minivans too. I would buy a bus if it could fit in my garage.

It's more like a station wagon, more competition for the Model X.
They are using marketing terms like Adventure & Utility which in real terms it completely lacks compared to a R1S.
If going that route I would go Gravity as I am really not a fan of the X styling or lack thereof.
Since the manufacturers are calling all the station wagon's SUV's it seems a new term is needed for actual SUV's.
Agreed a new term for SUV's is needed. It is not just wagons being called SUV's, it sedans and anything that rides high a SUV. BMW X6 SUV, GLE Coupe SUV, Rambo Urus SUV. Great example is the Porsche Cayenne GT Coupe SUV. I mean come on, consumers have to stop being so dumb and buying that has SUV in the name. I sat in the back of one and it is no different in terms of space to a Panamera. And yet, people still buy it over the Panamera...I guess they don't consider the worse driving dynamics, more gas and rubber with weight etc. They just want it because it's called a SUV.

Sadly it also helps manufacturers hit EPA targets because non-cars are held to a laxer standard. Plus for EVs the maximum qualifying price is higher.

My EV6 is basically a wagon but Kia managed to reclassify it as a SUV (the 2022 model that I have is shown on fuel economy.gov as a station wagon!)
