I don't trust the "real" one under the sheet behind of RJ. No side view mirrors? Weird appendage in back? I think it was intentionally "off" a little. I think they didn't want to reveal too much and I'm OK with that.

But lower profile, smaller frunk, no 3rd row... all to get it under $70K seems like a great move. The iconic eyes and front light bar was genius, even if not to everyone's immediate liking. They can tweak that a lot and it will still be unmistakably Rivian.
That is entirely possible! And I agree with you - I think it will be a big hit.

I can pass on some more info I gathered from our tour guide of the plant on Monday. He's seen it in person and said it's about same height as the R1. He also said that it's more like a squattier version length wise. The interior is way different then the r1 and you're going to either love it or hate it ha. He said it was super nice on the inside. That's about all I could get out of him.
I’m struggling to picture an interior that’s way different yet still super nice. The R1 interior is indeed super nice, so I wonder how that level of quality could be maintained yet be way different - especially if the R2 is supposed to be smaller and cheaper. Perhaps it’s not actually going to be much cheaper after all? Isn’t it still costing Rivian well over $100k to produce each R1 right now? I was assuming the R2 would be $70k or less, but that description makes that number seem difficult to hit. If the powertrain, suspension, etc., are totally different, that may be possible, but that would also be a total redesign compared to the R1 which would surely come with significant cost. Guess only time will tell.

I read this as "single center display." :D

I hope they don't go too wild with it. There's a large market for these types of vehicles and Rivian might be the first real EV entrant into it. No need to turn off buyers with a radical design.

Not for me, but that's okay. I'm waiting for somebody to make a small, 2-door electric FWD. Like old school jeep sized. I think I'm going to convert my 65 Scout cause its just not gonna happen otherwise.

I was thinking that too while reading it and really hope that's not the case.

I very much like the first model but as a forester owner, I really hate the angled rear window. With small wheel base and 4 doors, the boot/trunk space isn't great unless you stack things, and you need all the space you can when going camping
I wish SUV manufacturers would make the rear windows vertical so we could increase internal cargo space. I'm sure it won't make aerodynamics any worse.... the model underneath the covers fortunately looks like the angle isnt too severe, at least I hope that is the case...

All I'd need is a 2 motor/4wd option and as long a range possible while towing 2tonne. Don't really care about top speed. If it had electronic locking front and rear differentials, that would be awesome too...
Add the air suspension and some knobbly tires and it'd be a good mid sized off roader.

This might just be due to the angle at which the photo was taken, but the covered vehicle looks shorter (in height) than the renderings & quite a bit shorter than R1s. I'm 6'3", and, with a couple inches to spare, I can see over the roof of my R1S in kneel mode. AFAIK, RJ is less than 6ft tall but appears quite a bit taller than the covered R2.

I like either one. My preference is #1, but the boss will be the final decider...and when I say boss, I really mean my wife. She loves "her" R1T, but if the rumors are true and the R2T or S comes in under $70,000, we will probably get one of those as well.

I just want the option of having the light strip in the front (not headlights) move like Knight Rider.

My hopes for the R2S are:
1) sized about like a Subaru Outback
I would much prefer the Subaru Ascent (without the 3rd row)...we had one and it was nice
7) sliding doors like a minivan (I realize this could be controversial but you can't beat the practicality, especially with kids)
This would be nice option, but that would make it to much like a "minivan"....which for active families....might be a great option
8) heat pump
That would be a great thing in the wintertime especially.

What I am hoping for is new battery technology that will make the battery packs smaller and either give the same amount of mileage on a charge or increase the charge to 400+ miles. It would also be nice if the new ones have the ability to charge up to 400kW or higher which would fully charge a battery in under 30 mins.

One thing for sure, it is going to be interesting early next year.

I like the rendering, but really, I'd like Wrangler capable adventure vehicle more than anything. R1T is too bulky and heavy to be a wrangler replacement.

I am hoping the smaller R2 does the trick.
