Don’t shoot the messenger, but I think they’re still working out a lot of small kinks, and are therefore delaying deliveries to non-employees. If you read/watch the reviews that came out yesterday there was a large number of problems with the trucks. Just a few that I remember seeing:
-Power tonneau broken on all but one truck
-Very jittery cameras
-problem with window foam preventing the window from properly rolling up
-tailgate not dropping automatically
-regen causing overheating even on mild grades
-some windshield wipers having a mind of their own
-multiple reports of problems with Driver+
-laggy navigation/maps
-a few others I don’t remember off the top of my head

None of this to take away from the generally amazing success of the reviews, but I feel like there are quite a few fixes that might still need to be corrected before these get out in the real public.

Yes, I know the trucks from the reviews were pre-prod. And yes, I know OTA updates can potentially be used to fix the non-mechanical issues.
I really hope the issues with the infotainment system are software issues and not because the hardware isn't up to the task.

I only noticed the "regen causing overheating" issue. Where did you see the others? Also, which window had the problem?
It’s a compilation of the issues noticed across all of the reviews I read. I think the window issue was from the Bloomberg article, if I recall correctly.

That might explain a few things, looking back at my First Mile Event experience. I was looking to try the tonneau cover, but they told me they it was turned off for the event. I also noticed that the tailgate didn't drop when I pushed the button. I had to help it get started. I didn't really think much about it at the time.

I'm sure they are aware of the problems and have people working on it. Since I live close to Normal, I volunteer to take an early delivery and help them discover any issues that need to be fixed ;)

Tonneau cover and the iron man charging port are the top things that I think are going to be issues on the first generation of R1Ts.

Agreed. Most of that list sounds like software issues, but that Tonneau cover I think will be a problem. Things that "roll up" after getting dirty/dusty/sandy have a nasty tendency of gumming up and having issues.

The thought has crossed my mind to drop back down to the explorer edition to avoid long term issues with it. Not because if these reviews so much, but they certainly didn't help. Lol.

at the end of the day, I just want to get my truck despite the mo or concerns I have.

My father in law has one of the "Rolls up into a canister" ones on his F-250, and hooooly hell that thing is a pain in the ass. It worked awesome for a few years, but has gotten steadily more obnoxious over time. I have a roll up one on my Ram (TruXedo Sentry CT) that is... manual, but, yeah.. never fails (and is easily removable).

I figure I'm sticking with the Adventure package and just crossing my fingers they get it just right (or have a reaaaaaalllly good warranty).

Just ask anyone with an automatic pool cover. Unless it's squeaky-clean when you roll it back into its container you're going to end up with problems.

Died of old age during the wait
oh and to clarify there were a bunch more on siding off to the right of this photo.
A bunch more train cars - not Rivians, I assume? And are those ramps that could be used to drive cars onto the train?

I can't imagine a rail company storing railcars on siding at the rivian plant not intended for use by Rivian, but I could be wrong. I also can't imagine rivian getting a bunch of railcars to let them just sit on the siding for long periods of time.

Also that is my assumption as well, they have the ramps to roll the vehicles into the railcars.

Sadly I couldn't get close enough at the test drive event to see if there were vehicles in the railcars.

I'm pretty sure someone went by a week or 2 ago and said they saw no Rivians, no transport trucks, and no train cars so this is new information.

If I only could remember the thread that was in....

Obviously.

And the ramps change height to reach the second level in the rail cars. So that makes 18 R1Ts per car if they’re shipping them in bi-level cars.

At my First Mile event yesterday I did notice a couple of these things that have been talked about and pointed out from the reviews by @Diddy123. I think we are still a bit away from a clean build. Especially in the software and UX area.

  • The UI was sometimes less than responsive.
  • The cameras were laggy and had a slow refresh rate.
  • Certain areas of the UI were unimplemented on some of the trucks. This leads me to believe there is a spread of software versions running on the various trucks.
  • At one point during my drive the speedometer lagged or got frozen for a second or two. As I was crawling over some rocks, the dash said I was going 4mph. My drive coach told me I could go up to 6 mph, so I accelerated. A second or two later I saw the dash jump from 4 to 12. It felt like I was going 10+. This could be caused by the complexity of monitoring 4 different speeds of 4 independent motors and wheels. But with everything else, I attribute it to lagginess / UI issues.

I say all this knowing there is the rebuttal of OTA updates. I find it hard to believe that they would not want the best available software to show off to people at the First Mile events. You'd think they'd have the best software on all the trucks, instead of the spread of versions I saw. They could be using a spread of versions for testing some roll out functionality of the OTA update infrastructure. Or maybe they are implementing features so fast that not all the trucks have all the features yet.

I know they still have some stuff to do, but damn have they done a lot already. These trucks are awesome and I'm excited to see mine delivered (no date or guide yet).
