Is it safe to assume a stock R1T will fit a 285/65r20 tire with NO rubbing in any ride height? Can anyone help confirm this?

I'm closely following this thread, and researching other threads as I'm planning to go to 285/65's when my NACS adapter arrives and my 21" tires wear out.

That said, to summarize about the 285/65R/20:

1. Rubs on low setting with 20x9 aftermarket wheels (due to offset, see posts from forum member rexbo)

2. Doesn't rub on low setting with factory wheels (see post above from forum member oybed)

3. Likely would not rub with Thuren 20x8 wheels (See: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...ildpeak-r-t-tires-on-glacier-white-r1s.16458/)

But, this is just what I have summarized from my research.

My Nokian Outpost ATs in 285/65R20 rub while going over bumps in lowest on factory wheels.

Why bother is the question that nobody asks … the pirellis seem fine to me.

if you really want to get crazy, figure out how to fit 40s in there, grind away, and take it on Rubicon or Metal Masher or something with the modified rigs and get yourself a million views on YouTube.

If you’re aspiring to “off road” in Utah or somewhere dry do it in highway tires and you’re less likely to damage your vehicle by overestimating your abilities.😬
Here's the why since you asked - some folks purchased Rivian's with street set ups and are looking for off-road or snow options. This is my plan, sans the YouTube channel.

Thank you for putting together this thread! It really helped in choosing a fitment. I went a little on the aggressive side but knew exactly what to expect based on this thread. Rubbing on low ride height was expected - I never used low mode so didn't test extensively. In standard mode its perfect 99% of the time - only gets a *slight* rub at freeway speed on largest of dips or impacts, and oddly only on front left fender. I could probably sand the plastic down inside the fender a little and eliminate the contact totally but its so rare it doesn't bother me. High mode its 100% all the time.

Unfortunately 285/65R20 is a terrible size tire for the Rivian for a few reasons.
1. Weight is extreme, in the high 60s. Why not get the same tire 10 pounds lighter plus better fit?
2. Width is almost an inch more than OEM, almost 10" for many options.
3. Diameter is also nearly 35" (34.6 - 34.8 range).
4. Combo of extremes mean the tire corner can stick out 0.6 inches (0.2 up and 0.5 over).
Only exception might be the Defender LTX M/S in that size as it's only 9 inches wide.

Lots of other options in the 33.5" (285/60), 33.9" (295/60), and 34.1" (275/65) sizes:
33.9 Diameter examples (Agressive):
9.7" - Toyo open country (65#)
9.9" - Nitto Ridge Grappler (60#)
9.9" - Mickey Thompson Baja Legend (65#)
10" - Toyo Open Country A/T III (59#)

33.5" examples:
9.7" -TOYOOPEN COUNTRY A/T III (0.56/150)(56#)
9.5" -GOODYEARWRANGLER DURATRAC(58#)
9.6"NITTORIDGE GRAPPLER (0.57/138)(59#)
9.6" -SUMITOMOENCOUNTER AT(62#)
9.2"COOPERDISCOVERER S/T MAXX(63#)
9.8" -FALKENWILDPEAK A/T3W (0.62/127)(63#)

The Nokian Outpost in 285/65R20 is an excellent tire for Rivian for anyone wanting a real AT with minimal range impact (as far as real ATs go).

Has anyone fit 35’s on the oem 20’s?
35x11.5x20 or 295/65/20. Looking for more off road ability and not really cocorned with range as I have a second set of the factory 21’s. The factory 20’s are all beat up after 2 off road trips with little tears in the sidewalls.

Check with @twvette , shows on the table that he tested 35 x 11.5 x 20, table also shows that 295/65 had too much rubbing...

Not sure how mine got put down as OEM wheels on the table and that is incorrect. I run Thuren wheels as known to fit my 35's. Not sure what would do on OEM as even the few times I have run lowest setting on the Thuren's I have had zero rub, so not sure with what wheel offsets/height/ride firmness setting would start to get rub.

Your analysis fails to consider how the larger tires improve the looks & off road performance. For some of us that don’t need to maximize range, it’s worth the tradeoffs.

What if we were to hypothetically consider doing the opposite, mounting thinner than OEM tires? They’d be lighter and improve range. But I doubt/hope that anyone has done this, because it would look ridiculous!

To each his/her own. I love seeing people customize their Rivians, especially when they share photos.
