Quick question: will or should the native YouTube app work right now for folks that dont have C+? I've read about a trial but is that only for SXM or for everything in this update including YouTube?

I got it working after a soft reset. Casting and YouTube works and in the few mins I tested it out in my garage with our home wifi I was quite impressed....Thank you Rivian!! Great Christmas gift (even for someone like me who did not subscribe to C+) ?

Anyone NOT seeing the new YouTube app after the update? Update went well, I see SiriusXM, I had a banner telling me about YouTube/GoogleCast, but no icon on the bottom bar.
Did they pull out the feature or something?

Swipe up from the bottom just above the group of apps and click on the new video app.

No to Netflix as it isn't supported. Disney+ and ESPN+ work great. I couldn't get VLC to work for some reason, however.

I sincerely hope that number is wrong. If it is correct, then holy hell we need to educate folks about charging. Very, very few cars take anywhere near that long to charge even 10-80%. My average charging stop in the Rivian, a relatively slow charging vehicle that's also inefficient, is probably 30 min and often less. Unless I'm towing I've basically never seen a charging stop take over 40 min. Modern 800V vehicles like Hyundai/Kia, Porsche, Lucid, etc are all pulling 15-18 min 10-80% charges...fast enough that the car is probably done before the car occupants have taken care of business. With few exceptions, if that's the average, then far, far too many people are charging to very high state of charge on DC chargers and clogging up the stations. Encouraging this bad behavior with in-car video isn't ideal.
This is a very solid point.

While I think Rivian adding Google cast is a good idea, it baffles me how they’re willing to bundle all these streaming options into this solution requiring you use your phone and data plan, yet require you to sign up for C+, mainly a data plan, in order to use it.

It also seems contradicting to their stance on phone projection. They’ve said multiple times they won’t do CP/AA because they *believe* they can give a better experience natively. ?

If their software is already Android based, why don’t they just install Google play store and give us access to millions of already existing apps? Some other automakers are starting to do this and it seems like a good solution to both give customers a better experience and greatly reduce the amount of development needed. This would also tie people more to the native solution (requiring C+ subscription to use those apps). Could solve a lot of complaints about lack of map choices too, if they were to enable music and map apps to run while driving.

It's an edge-case feature, for sure, but more common than other features like using an air compressor, etc. Since the vehicle already has connectivity and a big, beautiful screen, it is worth having it for those cases. I mean, technically for every person who sees a feature as an edge case, there is likely another person that sees the same case as a main need right? For example, some people schedule the climate on their car daily to warm it up or cool it off from extreme temps, but for everyone living in San Diego they probably wonder why it's an option.

In addition to the obvious use case of watching a show or something while charging these would be some others (at least in my family):

  • Waiting for kids to get out of school activities/sports/theatre (which seems to always take way longer than it is supposed to)
  • Keeping kids happy while charging, at a rest stop, getting food, running into a store, etc
  • While eating in a parking lot (ski resort, rest stop, after getting a Christmas tree, after a hike, etc)
  • As a treat while glamping/car camping for kids to watch a movie before bedtime

Like I said, these could all be covered by handheld tablets, but since the screen is there, why not? I wish they would allow it's use while driving (how nice to have a crackling fireplace while on a winter road trip), but I understand that the liability would be insane and people just can't be trusted to not keep their eyes on the road.
A better (more than just an edge case) option/add-on that would get far more and more consistent use would be CarPlay. It’s not just for when you’re in Park and if you have an Android phone and apps with support., It’s for anytime you’re in the car. Or if we want to be more apples to apples why not add AirPlay and AppleTV to match GoogsCast and YT. CarPlay would be the killer add giving us many of the features most keep asking for including OnX, Gaia, Waze, messaging, name your most asked for apps to support, etc. I’m less than impressed by Cast coming given iOS doesn’t natively support it and there are few apps that support Gcast from iOS.

Such an edge case I was unsurprised to find nothing I use supports it. Plus with mobile devices at the ready it’s much easier to reach for your personal device and use that, Even for kids or any other passenger - sequestering the main display during a 20-30 min stop to charge is limiting. I might be using it to explore the next stop, get other stats, etc. There’s little time to enjoy something worth pulling up onto a larger screen that couldn’t be done on a MacBook, iPad, iPhone, or any non Apple device. CarPlay on the other hand, lots you don’t want to be doing on another device, while driving.

Anyone have an app that will allow me to cast my “home videos/ripped videos” that are in my Apple TV app? Apple TV app only airplays and doesn’t cast.

I tried to cast Netflix from my iPhone and it didn’t find the truck under devices. I haven’t read through all 7 pages but it should be working, right?
