What's current experience like with windshield replacement?

I see a bunch of somewhat older threads about this. Am wondering what it's like now? I took delivery of my R1S, which I otherwise love, but I *already* have two chips (!) in the windshield after only two weeks (!!)

I have $0 deductible glass coverage FWIW.

Anyway I appreciate knowing what it's like these days. Do third party types have the glass to install? (Historically they've come to my home to do this). Or do I need to take it to a SC?

I recently had to replace my front windshield and I was able to take it locally to a Rivian Certified Collision Center rather than to the closest SC, which is 4 hours away. Rivian customer service can tell you if any are located closer to you.

My boyfriends ‘24 DM R1S has 2 serious chips one on each side /driving back from Las Vegas/ on interstate 5. Went to a Rivian Certified Repair shop in San Rafael, Ca. Took the R1S in around the end of March and still waiting for the shop to receive the “certified Rivian” windshield. The chip has now stretch across both sides of the windshield, and when the R1S gets the call it will probably be a few days to a week.?

@Robin thanks. To clarify, are you saying that you had to first bring the R1S to the SC to have them look at it, and only then did they order the glass? And, that once the glass comes in they're saying it will take a few days to a week to install? That's crazy cakes compared to what I've experienced with other vehicles.

@KTR1 curious about the timing - how long did it take them to get the glass, and then how long did they have your car for the install?

I’ve had two replaced on my R1T and getting ready for a third. Had the first one done at a Certified Collision Center while in for PDR after hail damage and they had to take it to the service center for calibration. Second one done at the service center and it took a couple of days once I could get an appointment. Will do the Certified Collision Center this time since they can calibrate now.

Thanks for the info but yikes. Is there something just plain bad about the angle of the windshield or something? Or the glass itself? Like I've gotten chips in the past on other cars, but more like, 1 in 5 years. Not 2 in 2 weeks.

Kinda thought the same thing, lol. This will be the third replacement in 18 months. First one was something big on the passenger side, second was smaller and thought we had it repaired, but some cold weather and the defroster proved us wrong. About the same spot as the first so it was odd. This last one was something bigger on the lower driver side, no chance to repair as it was rather large from the start. My wife has been frustrated with it for sure.

@ErichMF76 well 1 every 6 months is better than 2 in 2 weeks I guess :CWL: But yeah this is not good.
We do have just under 34K on the odometer too. Outside of San Antonio in a more rural area so roads aren’t the best, but first one happened on the toll road so can’t really use that excuse.

Yeah we're Boston-area, so not the greatest roads in the world, but not dirt and gravel either. I get that random stuff happens but 2 chips in 2 weeks is nuts!

Might want to consider protection film

Yup definitely thinking about this especially if the glass can't be swapped at home as it could with all my other prior vehicles. I suppose sooner or later it will be but don't want to deal with stays at the SC.

Safelite has the glass for mobile repair now. Mine was broken yesterday and they're replacing at my house next Tuesday. They did emphasize that I'd need calibration done at the service center or a certified shop.

Oh that's great! Thanks for confirming!

BTW what is this calibration everyone is referencing? I don't think I've ever had that done in any prior vehicle.

Taking mine in to the Phoenix service center tomorrow for replacement. Have to then get my insurance to reimburse me.

Rivian pointed me to a certified collision center in Phoenix area, they did not do glass, so they pointed me to a glass company supposedly approved by Rivian. That company never returned my call. So had to go back to Rivian and wait weeks for an appointment. FYI, Phoenix has one certified collision center with two locations in all of Phoenix.

Overall, a very bad experience, compared to my other vehicles. My insurance company sets me up with a glass installer, they come out and replace it at my house, no out of pocket expense to get reimbursed. At the time mine broke, Safelite was not a choice, but even so, having to take it in for separate calibration is ridiculous.
