Will Rivian ever get FSD?

I hope not. At least not until FSD reaches true Level 5 autonomy, which IMHO is still many years away (if it ever happens).

I bought a Model 3 with Enhanced Auto Pilot in June 2018, then paid to add FSD in spring 2019 when Tesla discounted it to $2,000. I've used FSD sporadically since then. I've since realized that I'm just one of many guinea pigs who paid for the "privilege" of feeding real world driving data to a Tesla computer. The current version of FSD is much better, but it's still nowhere close to fulfilling Elon's promise of real autonomy. (While I'm not an Elon fan, I love my Tesla, almost as much as I love my Rivian.)

No one has FSD right now. Maybe when AI can drive a car it will happen. But there isn't such a thing as Full Self Driving in 2024.

I think most would agree Tesla UI and featureset is far better. They've had a decade head start.

I've owned both and still think Tesla is better in that respect.

The Rivian is far more useful, but both have completely different use cases in my opinion. I don't think many are cross shopping since one is double the price.

It's not a Tesla.

"FSD" is a Tesla thing. And the term shouldn't be used by *ANYONE*, not even Tesla. As there is no "full" or "self" going on.

Rivian has Driver+, which will expand to have higher levels of driver-assistance, theoretically expanding up to SAE Level 3 at some point.

Tesla's so-called "FSD" seems very good until it gets involved in a fatal accident. Tesla calls it SUPERVISED "FSD," which is a marketing gimmick. The name should be just autonomous driving. However, Tesla does not use this term to avoid any lawsuit. It goes like this; Self-driving (oh shoot, the system is terrible. Let's call it full self-driving when it gets a little better)-->Full self-driving (oh shoot, it is still not doing well. let's call it SUPERVISED FSD, so we can avoid lawsuits). it goes on and on and on..... next will be REAL FSD-SUPERVISED or something like that. So people keep paying for this unsafe and incomplete system.

Given the capital constraints of Rivian, I agree with this conclusion.

I was highly skeptical of FSD until I used it with the free trial in my wife’s Tesla. It is quite good, and much more than the tunic I expected it to be.

I think we’ll continue to see marginal improvements in Driver+, but that’s about it.

So you want Rivian to charge you an insane amount of money for something that you don’t actually own?
I owned a 2018 Tesla model 3 which I paid 6k for FSD. someone smashed into it so I had to replace it with a 2023. Tesla did not offer transfers of FSD at the time and will not transfer it so I would have to buy it again. There is no guarantee they will offer a transfers of FSD on your next vehicle. The price has fluctuated between six to $15,000. I really don’t want Rivian to adopt the same strategy of charging us for some thing that we can’t put in our next vehicle. The current system works better than auto pilot did at two years in. And they didn’t charge us anything for it.

I sure hope it was better than the crash that was on the Model Y loaner that I had when my Y had some warranty work being done. The Model Y itself? Amazing vehicle. Musk? Blech!! ? So glad to be a Rivian family now.

If it means it drives as good as Blue Cruise on my mach e hands free than yes. I have a phone and laptop so understand I'm tracked everyday. So well past being concerned about privacy we gave that up long ago.

Also I may be the most interesting man on the earth so love being on camera.

I own both. The Model Y was mine for a little over a year before getting the R1S. My wife owns the MYP now. I don’t trust FSD to be honest, too many nightmare stories that most folks never hear about. Tesla has been working to improve it for years. It’s just not worth it, although the cost has significantly decreased with a $100 per month subscription for current owners I believe. Tesla just enabled FSD for all owners with an OTA update for a free one month trial in an effort to increase adaption and make $$$.

I totally agree with the toy like feel of the MY compared to the Rivian. The MY has a plastic, stiff and hollow feel compared to the R1S’s more luxurious feel. As far as Tesla’s software being clunky and confusing, I would disagree here. I think its great. If you haven’t used it before it could be overwhelming because it is feature packed, perhaps too many features for some. But, I do like Rivian’s software presentation. Its simple layout makes it easier to learn but could benefit from a lot of features Tesla has.

Agree with almost all of this having previously owned an MYP before the R1T…except that in almost every one of the lawsuits and claims it has turned out that driver error was to blame (ie disregarding the instructions that the human driver pay attention and keep a hand on the wheel). I still don’t trust FSD, but it’s the people that just can’t get out of their own way …
