I just had my electrician install a plug for my soon to be delivered Rivian. He recommended a 30 amp plug rather than the 50 amp one because my house only has 100 amp service. I think the gist is that if I run the oven, dryer and charge the R1T at the same time as other regular stuff I could pop my main breaker. Upgrading the service/panel to 200 amps is thousands of dollars.
Looks like now I will have to get a different portable charger as the Rivian one only does 50 amp outlets.
I can charge overnight with the 30 amp no problem so that is not much of an issue.
The 30 amp outlet does not qualify for the Evergy install rebate of $500 but I don't qualify anyway because I have net metering for my solar, and I probably don't want to go to the Time of Use plan anyway.

Are there a lot of people with these issues?

Bought a house this summer, electrical panel was in a closet with the water main.... Gave me the excuse to rewire the entire house and upgrade to 200 amp service with power running to my future Rivian wall charger

Edit: Cost about 22k for the electrical rewire, 1 main and two sub panels. and another 1000 for BC Hydro to come out and up the service to the house. Perfect time to do renos, mid covid price hike

I used my portable charger on a 30amp circuit for weeks while waiting for my Wall Charger to be installed. I just made a NEMA 14-50R to NEMA 14-30P (for my clothes dryer) pigtail from parts at Home Depot. They make adapters you can get on Amazon as well.

The portable one included with the truck is 32A. It's legal to feed a 14-50 outlet with a 40A breaker, and in the case of panel capacity concerns, probably the only reason I'd even consider doing it that way.

My ca. 1960 house has 100A service, and a full panel.

New garage will be built before rivian arrives. it will either get separate 200A service or I’ll move the service entrance to the garage, upgrade my service, and feed the house from there.

I currently use this setup (32A Clipper Creek) with 100A service and have never had any issues.

Yes...just make sure you set the truck to charge at 24A, lest it overload the 30A circuit.

I see the latter most often as most utilites around here charge for a separate meter base on the same property.

Either way, I'm thankful I had the foresight to go with 400A service when I built 17 years ago.

Frankly, I thought about bringing in another 200 amps on top of the 200 I already have for a good long while; it the quotes I got proved that it was a bit of an extravagance. Really only looked into because I thought I’d be getting the 90amp charger from Ford for the lightning, and another wall charger for wife (who has the R1S reserved), but we decided to go all in on Rivian.

We moved into a new construction home about 5 years ago with a 200A service and no gas. I did the demand-load calcs, and it came out around 190A. Yeah, no.

We paid the thousands when we first moved in to upgrade to 400A so we wouldn't have it looming over us for all the expected future upgrades. Now I don't even have to think about it when I want to install a new toy (hot tub got inspected today; I passed :D).

I love on a larger property with a barn and other buildings and the owners before us out in 600amp service. When my electrician came to install my Tesla charger years ago he started laughing. I didn’t quite understand how lucky we were.

Now we have 3 roofs full of solar panels too so we’re ready for a fleet of EVs.

I am in similar situation with 100A service. We are doing home remodels and I am converting appliances to gas as we go to open up panel space. Not sure if this is an option for you. I also saw devices that will share a dryer plug and switch between them. Not sure your proximity of dryer to EVSE but that may be an option. Good luck with the install!

Question for all, I’m in same boat. Shouldn’t the electrician install 14-50 which is 50 amps and use the truck software to limit to 30 amps?
