Thank you all for replying. Your collective responses gave me the answer I was looking for - a 30-35% dip over a 6 week period is possible. I never considered that given my conditions haven’t changed that dramatically (the last weeks have been chilly, not polar vortex) but clearly I was wrong. I could look at motor and battery temps and wind direction, etc. But honestly I don’t care enough to go through all that - I just wanted to know if I had a bigger problem.
This comment may piss some of you off, but not being able to confidently go farther than 75 miles in one direction on a charge in winter is massively disappointing. I guess shame on me for not doing more research but that’s pretty weak.
Please review the thread linked below. I have been keeping careful track of my efficiency in Minnesota winter driving. I can easily do my 165 mile trip to our cabin in subzero weather. The efficiency reported by the truck will significantly increase on long trips vs short trips because the battery needs a long time to warm up. Your range will be far greater than 75 miles

First off, that's like WALL-E level sadness looking at all those shutdown cars. Second, are these local yahoos who didn't charge at home? Third, superchargers are the most reliable charging infrastructure. To see an entire site down is unheard of. Fourth, this is a problem if the navs let these non-local people route here. Fifth, it's a legit news story overall reporting on a rather embarrassing and real issue.

Agree 100 percent with this statement. Not sure many would care about the loss of range if you could pull in anywhere every 5 miles, have the charger available, have the charger work and be able to charge in 15 minutes.

The other thing to note (at least on 20s) is the tires. I'm getting almost 25 percent better efficiency this winter on my Michelin hybrid all season tires than I did last winter on the stock tires. High of ZERO F today (central Illinois) which is an 8 degree improvement from yesterday.
Are those tires considered "green" or ev rated? And would you say you are getting as good or better as the stock 21's?

I also did not do research re: the cold weather problem for mileage. This is a major issue for EV’s vs. ICE vehicles and will ultimately need to be fixed for much more reliability. Any ice vehicle is happy to run with minimal mileage degradation in the cold as the engine automatically creates the heat needed for all systems to work so heating the interior will not have a marketable effect on mileage.

I have no idea what the range on 21s would be in my use case. They officially are not an ev tire because of the weight rating, but they are the same rubber and design as their ev tire. Michelin rep was in Costco when I bought them and confirmed. My efficiency for the last 25,000 miles was 2.36 a couple of weeks ago. That was before bitter cold the last week and wouldn't include as many miles the last 2-4 weeks. Probably 70 percent state highway & interstate driving in AP/conserve (only standard ride height).

You might want to install the latest update.
I know I had the same bad mileage a few weeks back and it was in the 30's F with many short trips a day.

Today I am getting 2mi/kwh from a dead cold (20F) battery and 25 mile trip. Of course there is some vampire drain sitting overnight but even with these I'm at least at 1.6mi/kwh; again short trips.

This smells like anti EV trolling. It’s simply not as bad as some like say online. It’s a reduction that’s not to unlike ICE in the winter. Nobody likes to say it but gas cars lose 10% or more of mpg in winter too.
I’m a genuine Rivian owner. Started the thread to learn if I had a major problem or if this is “normal”. My Land Rover def lost 10% in the winter (partly due to the change in gas formulas in the winter) but 30% shocked me.

I’m loving the cold weather performance.

I used pre-condition feature and the update came just in time for 14 degree temps.

Before warming up the vehicle, cabin temps showed 41 degrees in my garage.

I’m getting 1.91 mi/kWh on 20” AT driving mainly on the highway between 65 mph and 74 mph. This is with snow mode which has low regen.

current temps outside show 19 degrees on the dash with battery at 53 degrees.

Was this the same day? Or over multiple days? Details would help.

It stays in my garage, so while it’s there it’s cool but warmer than outside. I rarely “pre warm” before driving.
Just did a hwy trip @ 62mph, 30F, seat heaters on, cabin temp set @ 73F, 20AT in conserve yielded 2.25mi/kwh.
10 mile drive shortly before leaving on hwy trip.
I thought that was pretty decent.
and many SUV tanks hold 600-700+ miles. ICEs lose range, too, but it's not a problem.
Really many SUV's get 600-700miles to a tank? Seems like most of them are glorified station wagons.
I am not aware of too many off-road capable SUV's that get that sort of range, even fewer that have the performance of the R1.
There may be some I am just curious of what comparable ICE SUV that has that sort of range.
I would agree for sure there is room for improvement with EV range especially in winter.

are... are you driving on snow at 70mph?? I'm pretty sure snow mode isn't really for cold pavement as much as it's for driving on hard pack and ice ?

I know this thread got off topic and came back and went off topic again, but if it hasn't been made clear yet it sounds like most of your range was eaten up by warming your vehicle to operating temperature. A loss of 30% range was observed because your vehicle was cold, and it's extremely difficult for the vehicle to warm itself up while moving through cold air.

In the future, if you use the new .50.01 features to precondition your vehicle and schedule a drive, I bet you'd see a dramatic increase in range. Even for those short drives starting away from home, it seems like in 10F to 20F weather the vehicle uses only 1-2% battery to warm itself up. If you take off with a completely cold vehicle, you'll easily lose 10-15% battery doing the same thing it appears.

I'm coming from ICE vehicles myself, and I admit it's going to take me a lot of getting used to before I've got things dialed in. My Bronco was not an efficient vehicle whatsoever, but I got away with it by filling up all the time.

I’m mainly using snow mode for low regen. I’m more worried about patches of black ice then snow.

Some Range Rovers have a 27.5 gallon tank and get 23 highway. That's 632 miles of highway range. A Grand Cherokee 4WD will get 598 miles EPA highway. A Highlander hybrid will do 595 miles highway. A Yukon XL Turbo-Diesel has a 38 gallon tank and gets 26 highway in 4WD, for an astonishing 988 miles!

The R1 has great performance. Much better than those SUVs. I would love to trade that for more range. That much acceleration in such a heavy vehicle is actually fairly dangerous to others, and to my own aging neck!
