I don't think waiting two months longer would have helped. It's up to Tesla who can use what adapters on their charging network.
I don't think that will remain the case. Opening up the network (to get subsidies) also included standardizing the "NACS" plug into SAE 3400. If it's standardized, then any approved adapter would be fine. For now, only the Tesla adapter is approved but that won't satay the case. There's no way Tesla can say only their adapter is accepted once there are other options.

The problem is they only hold validation/certification authority for what will work with R1 cars and NOT Tesla’s Superchargers. They would likely get into an heap of trouble perhaps even jeopardizing the whole agreement if they approve an adapter that Tesla won’t certify for use with their Superchargers. I’m sure part of ā€œwhat’s in it for Teslaā€ is being the sole supplier for the adapters (and hopefully not the ports to be integrated into future EVs).
Ah. I'm sure you are right. That makes sense. Forgot about the Supercharger cert issue...

But who's going to say it's an approved adapter? That's the big question. Maybe if/when the UL certification is out and companies meet it but I'm not sure anyone can stop Tesla from having their own adapter as the only approved one. There is no one to challenge them.

According to this doc, 15 companies are working on some part of the connection. "Certified CCS1 (vehicle) to J3400 (charger) adapters are anticipated to become available in the market in 2024." Elsewhere it said "mid-2024", aka now or so.

Whenever I see another Rivian at a DCFC, when on a road trip (it’s been about every other weekend over the last couple of months) I tend to bring that up to try to get ideas about how that’s progressing. That owner was the first that had gotten the opt-in AND the address check emails. I’ve only gotten the opt-in (early April) - seems like the first batch of opt-ins. Every few days I check my junk folder for that second email. It seems like if they were in the 3k range at the start of May they were probably at about 1k/wk. But I don’t have any other data points to have a good idea of what the lead time might be. Plus the one datapoint I collected was just after Elmo set off the Supercharger dumpster fire so it’s super stale.

That’s where this thread could become far more useful, if owners could be providing updates on when they’re getting their address validation email and receiving shipments in the context of what their VIN k range is.
I just double checked and I got the email April 4th. So hopefully we both hear something soon. Above is a good practice I should get in the habit of that.

Only if everyone stops asking and only those that receive an adapter announce its arrival. But there aren’t any since none have shipped since the initial allotment and in the meantime the machinations of some in the past few pages are mind boggling.

Given the uncertainty, either get an adapter if you want Tesla SC access now or plan your trips the old fashioned way using the CCS1 network.

The manufacturer makes adapters, and ships them in bulk to Tesla, but it takes months to redo the process to ship those adapters in bulk to Ford and Rivian? Golly!
Tesla is making them in Upstate NY and they just laid off a bunch from that team.

That’s what’s happening.

How do you know this is what Rivian wanted? Maybe part of the deal was the Tesla would have an exclusive on approved adapters. It would be nice for 3rd party adapters to be officially approved but I have a feeling that's on Tesla to allow.
Absolutely not - part of the entire point to creating NACS SAE and UL listings was to mitigate this issue. If Tesla shows a station as supporting NACS, they have to allow anyone that receives complies to SAE and UL listings. Same with any warranty disclaimers. If they didn't then every manufacturer would have to rely on Telsa for NACS ports to integrate into their vehicles. No manufacturer in their right mind would go along with that.

The only reason it is that way currently is the listings are not complete.

Ha-ha. Maybe you are unaware, Tesla is supplying the adapters at cost, with zero profit built in. And they will only ship as many boxes of them as Rivian orders and pays for. Tesla is not planning to lose any money on their offer to manufacture the adapters.

How do you know it’s at cost? And Im sure ford and Rivian would love to order more. It’s Tesla that’s limiting production.

I know it's at cost because that's what Tesla stated when they made the deal with Ford.

A better question is how do you know Tesla is limiting production? That sounds like a wild, unsupported conspiracy theory with nothing to back it up.

I think I have more evidence than you do. Adapters are trickling out. That’s a production problem.
