I had knocking and play between acceleration and regen.
Not a lot of vibration under acceleration but hard knocking upon torque reversal.
No vibration issues either. Mine became more and more prominent as time passed. Finally Rivian replaced both half shafts and wheel hub assemblies. Problem was fully resolved, and has remained so for the last few months.

Your half-shaft spline probably weakened. That's an extremely stressed component and that's the same issue I'm dealing with.

My clunk is when the vehicle starts off from a decline or incline....on level surface hardly ever encounter it. To me the front motor is out of sync on the driver's side and new-ish half shaft splines already having wear again. Hasn't gotten worse so letting it be for now.

Had front left replaced and the new one sounds worse then the old.
The chatter may lessen overtime, but that may mean the half shaft is simply wearing out. A new Half shaft might bring the chatter back. It's able to move freely within the linkage.

the bigger problem is that they start to fail and will vibrate under high torque.
thank you for starting this thread! I’ve had this issue since winter, and I believe it’s same half shaft issue. SC compared it to a demo TriMax vehicle and said it’s normal for the vibration. But I really really hope they find a better solution for a new half shaft soon!

This happened to me in my old Gen 1 Quad! Both fronts replaced and it was even worse! Got rid of that truck. Now my new Trimax is doing the same thing. Only 2500 miles on it. Its terrible. Its not just noise, its vibration, shaking, and harshness. The whole ride experience has gone to crap.

Why did I buy another Rivian? Ugh.

This would seriously be such an awesome vehicle if the suspension didn't ruin the whole experience.

Because the design inherently has not changed between either G1 or G2 generation. I will say, the Cybertruck does not do this.

Jonger - Just a note on the temperature issue that you've noted...It's been unseasonably warm here (low 70s) and I have noticed a big increase in rattling/clattering from the front. It's a loose bucket of bolts. In the morning, after temps have dropped overnight into the mid 40s, the sound is much less. By the afternoon, it sound like the front end is going to fall apart.

To me, this must mean its lubricant and viscosity related.

The play is related to front drive with gear lashing issue. SC just replaced mine, including half shafts and hubs. Problem gone. But they clearly said that the knocking between acc. and decc. were related to gear lashing.

Na, doesn’t sound right. It’s the shaft play on the axel. You can feel it if you move it by hand.

I've had halfshaft replacements that didn't resolve my clatter. In fact, I had everything replaced on my Gen1 except for the front drive units. I suspect the issue was the half-shaft to drive unit connection point. There must be play/slop at that connection, not from internal halfshaft ball-bearing extension point.

That is exactly what SC told me and the cause was in front drive unit gear.
I am talking only about the knocking issue when acc. decc.
