I'm watching this thread as I'm on the original 12V battery in a Sep 2023 Gen 1 R1S (49,000 miles). I've been wondering when it's time to go in for a preventative replacement.

For those of you above that mentioned a battery health check, could you please elaborate on the software you are using to see this? It sounds very useful.
We had mobile service yesterday on our Oct 23 R1S and they surprised me by adding a preemptive 12V battery replacement. No mention of it for my 22 R1T when it was in for some warranty work a coupla weeks ago but it's on battery set #3.

I was driving along and saw the dreaded RED battery icon on the display. My R1T is an early batch, March of '22 with almost 39K on it. I have an appointment in mid April for service where one of the things was to check the 12v health, but they recommended having a mobile unit do it NOW. They will be coming out from Cleveland next week. They want me to keep it on charge when not driving it until then.

I use Home Assistant as the backbone of my smart home, so the Home Assistant integration for Rivian (Unofficial) is perfect for me. I set up a basic dashboard with several pages of the metrics provided by the integration. It's totally free to install and use, and all the data is saved locally so I can poke around in the metrics and view historical data whenever I feel like it.

If you're not running Home Assistant and/or don't feel like managing data and dashboards yourself, the best alternative IMHO is Rivian Roamer. I haven't used it, but I've read and heard lots of good things about it.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm now signed up with Rivian Roamer. It'll take a few charging cycles before it reports my battery health.

it is strange though that everyone having multiple replacements is in the recall campaign group.
Makes me think that in the instructions for the recall work they left out “register the new battery with the vehicle” which is something cars have been needing for 20 years.

Had conversation with SC staff. The answer may not satisfy everyone but here it goes...

[Paraphrasing] Because I did not actually observe any 12V related warnings on the driver display or experience any anomalies, it may just be a simple case of a generic replacement campaign—due to suspicion of a bad manufactured batch from suppliers, a batch that sat in storage too long, or was kept in storage/transit that was too hot. SC staff do not have visibility on actual reason. Only that affected vehicles have been flagged for 12V replacement (i.e. as much as affected customers see). "They don't tell us" were exact words. And whatever software-based monitoring there is, is written and done by that side of the company.

So, if we really want to know more, we need to ask Wassym and Vidya whenever there is another AMA.

On another front, regarding drooping front suspension... They went straight for warranty replacement as solution. But, do not currently have right side damper (deferring to another appt. 2 weeks from now). I asked if it's because of air leak, staff immediately shook his head and said damper. I take that to be a known issue with earlier production.

And, for sake of knowledge, if not warranty (out of pocket), labor rate @ Lake Forest, CA is $250/hr.

[edit] Makes no difference if you're mad about this. It is what it is and I am not your therapist.

If the SC is at all correct in their statement, this sounds like a very inefficient process. They are replacing batteries not knowing whether the replacement is bad or not. This explains why people are replacing batteries two and three times.

Interesting find. I noticed my R1S having the same issue with the drooping front end. Basically, at its lowest point after being parked for over 4-5 days. Never did it before, maybe started within the last couple of months. I’ll open a service ticket and see what they find…

I’ve had the 12V battery replaced twice by Rivian as a precautionary measure, even though I’ve had no issues whatsoever. Not sure what’s going on? Has anyone had trouble with the 12V battery?

Received a call today to replace 12v battery under warranty. Last time they replaced it in Nov 2024.

Absolutely - the last time my 12V issue manifested itself by giving me a warning to find a safe place to pull over because the car was shutting down shortly. A full reset fixed it and I was able to drive. It wasn't until the 3rd time it happened that I also got a 12V warning. In addition to the 12V ('23 R1S) they also replaced another module or two that they thought might be causing the issue. No issues since.

Just got the call out of the blue for a warranty replacement of my 12 volt battery that has never given me any problems in two and a half years. Luckily it's in Mobile fix so it's no big deal.

No call, but I got the red triangle warning yesterday on my March 23 R1T. I just bought it used wit 25k miles in it 3xweeks ago.

SC said out of warranty (by a few weeks) so I have to pay. I did get full maintenance history--no previous 12v issues.

I kept asking, and am now, down to $350+tax for 2 batteries replaced. I'll let them do it this time and hope the, sodium solution proves out in the next 2 years before I need to replace again.

Kinda hard to tell my wife that my truck that I bought to save us money 😉 😉 needs new batteries.

The flip side is I got my home charger today and filled my truck up with sunshine. 🌞
