Hopefully you are still in warranty. My suspension failed at 69k miles -- out of warranty. It was not a cheap repair, costing me $6k. To me, this feels like a design flaw.

Exactly this. Get the film, it is inexpensive and easily replaced. I have had a number of strikes and, fingers-crossed, only minor blemishes in the film. 19k+ miles and counting.
