For comparison, I just had my son's Audi Q7 windshield replaced. Safelite couldn't do it based on the re-calibration of the advanced safety systems needed. Audi dealer costs was $2300 with re-calibration. Also would not direct bill Progressive Insurance. So had to pay upfront and submit claim to Progressive. So I find $1700 to be "reasonable" for this class of automobile... unfortunately.

I'm here to vent and commiserate!

I'm a huge fan of my R1S... just this week I told someone who asked how I liked it ... That "it changed my life" (I said it with out thinking and it kind of made me second guess my answer in the moment)

However, maybe the universe is telling me to pump the brakes...

Monday an unknown rock chip revealed itself by way of the car wash, leading to a quickly advancing crack...

The positive part of this is that the Las Vegas service center is able to get me in this week!

THE OVERWHELMING NEGATIVE is that the full cost of a replacement piece of glass is $1700 installed!!!

There is no other alternative to such a vulnerable part of the car, no mobile glass, wont sell to other more reasonable cost installers, wont release the sensor calibration software!

Coincidentally the service centers also doesn't work with most insurance providers to file glass claims!

Coming from a Jeep JL Wrangler I am no stranger to bad glass and frequent windshield repair! $700 bucks a pop is the common cost in Jeep world, but $1700 only at the service center is Highway ROBBERY !!

I looked up window replacement for a 2023 BMW 740-it can range up to $2000. Explanations include if it has to be an original market replacement, sensors imbedded in the glass or attached. I think overall parts are ridiculously expensive for new models

Guys, make sure you get safety glass replacement coverage on yr policy! I'm also paying $2k for replacement with full reimbursement, some states require it as policy rider. Would avoid safelite since they have no track record with Rivians, I'm using Rivian certified repair firm--but check their Google reviews as well!

It's not out of line for this class of vehicle - new company, limited number of vehicles on the road, camera system and/or heads up display, etc. Four years ago my wife's X3 with heads up display and camera cost $1500 to replace. The BMW dealer used Safelight to replace the glass and then BMW dealer did the calibration.

It's what it costs these days for a high tech vehicle with a limited number of them on the road. It's not a competitive OEM market, unlike Jeep windshields where there are millions on the road. You should have anticipated this before even buying a Rivian.

When I got my Tesla model y, on my first weekend a friend of my son decided to throw some pebbles to the air and made a crack on the windshield.

$1650 to replace as I could not find any local repair glass shop willing to repair a tesla windshield. They mentioned if they do not install it properly and the cameras aren't aligned and I have an accident while using dad or similar they will be at fault.

I think my biggest gripe is that the glass quality on the windshield and roof is really bad. I wouldnt mind the premium in price if we had some tough high quality glass. Peoples elbows resting on roof have broke it. That is nuts lol

I am firmly with you on this... The glass should be a higher quality all around.

I've even thought about a way to swap the roof glass with a carbon fiber plug and some acoustic dampening!

Paying a premium price for a lesser quality is my biggest gripe as well

What is your real, based on facts and statistical data, source for your information and the quality of the glass compared to other OEM's? Going by your profile you don't own a Rivian.

So I think a lot of people don’t realize all the cameras and driver + / autopilot feature attached to the windshield compared to older cars. This is what accounts for the major cost.

btw windshield must be made to a specific standard published by the NTHSB, roof glass not so much.

If I may humbly suggest, do not let this glass issue bother you much, at least in terms of your overall impressions of the R1S, such an awesome machine beast!
I have my R1S and also Teslas. With my Teslas, I quickly realized that EVs have a ton of glass, perhaps more than other vehicles that is just begging for a rock or anything to hit any of it and damage it. I am so sorry this happened to you. I understand it firsthand.
Having realized how much more glass there is, what I did to address this danger was to purchase auto insurance glass coverage for my EVs. All the glass, every last piece of it, including headlights is covered, and there is NO DEDUCTIBLE!
Like you, one of my Teslas winshield got hit and cracked. I quickly made an appointment with the Tesla SC; like Rivian, Tesla SCs do not deal with insurance companies. Not a problem at all. Paid Tesla, submitted claim to my insurance company, and was fully refunded the entire amount, no deductible, the next day. Heck, the insurance company even 100% covered the reinstallation of window film I had installed in my previous winshield. A largely hasssle-free endeavor.
Total cost for Tesla glass replacement and windshield film was $1,6000. Cost me nothing out of pocket. And the glass coverage with my insurance company costs $250 or $500 a year. Well worth it for me not ever having to worry about glass breakage.

I concur with the others in this thread who believe $1700 is not exorbitant. I recently had Rivian replace the windshield which I had to pay out of pocket and then submit to State Farm. When I asked my agent about this expense she said it was quite reasonable and not to worry about my rates jumping.

$1700 is not that bad. Tesla charges $1450 for model 3.
