I am praying they adopt Tesla's policy where the first owners were able to get lifetime charging for free and later buyers would have to pay.
Not a chance.

Tesla purposefully advertised free unlimited charging as a selling point of the vehicles - up until they removed that perk.

Rivian has *NEVER* said it would always be free. They have always said it would cost money eventually.

Free unlimited, wether forever or just a set period of time, leads to *TERRIBLE* charger etiquette. The number of ID.4s who sit at Electrify America stations all the way to 100% (or long after at stations with no idle fee) is ridiculous.

Personally, I like the "free 30 minute session every two hours for the first year of ownership." A time limit per session/day ensures people don't just sit at them forever (I like requiring a "cool down period" too, otherwise you can just unplug and replug,) and having it be a perk of early ownership, not a permanent thing. Get first-time-EV-owners used to the idea of plug in for a short time and leave, but don't "waste money" by making it forever.

I thought the RAN stations were Rivian only right now? At the Salida, CO RAN there were 4 DCFC and 4 L2 chargers. Any EV could use the 4 L2 (waypoint) chargers, only Rivians could use the RAN DCFC chargers.
Correct. RAN are CCS (225kW) and are Rivian-only for the time being.

Waypoints are J1772 (11kW) and are open to all EVs.

If RAN remains Rivian-only after the NACS switch, I predict many confused non-Rivian drivers. "I can charge at that one (Waypoint) but not that one (RAN,) even though they have the same plug! Heck, I predict confused Rivian drivers "why is that one free, but that one costs money?"

To be honest, I can't remember if they were the waypoints or the RAN's. I just know they were RIVIAN branded. They definitely had a few L2's there
The difference is easy to tell. RAN is a fridge-like cabinet, similar to EA and EVgo chargers. Waypoint is the size of a home charger, mounted on a post.

I suppose it doesn't matter if you don't care about time

Yeah, I do know which are which.....they have both there. But to be honest, I didn't really take notice of which ones they were plugged into....I was just surprised to see Teslas there. Going to stop there on the way home tomorrow....I will let you know!

Don't worry. Tesla's will start seeing R1Ts, Chevy Bolts and everything in between starting next year at their sacred Superchargers.

Payback is going to be a b***h!

I predict Riots will ensue due to cable length issues

Just charged at a brand new one (barely any signage, back of a parking lot) literally two miles from home -- free as well. Oddly enough, I'd just been complaining recently that the closest DC charger was too far away from home . . :CWL:

I charged at a level 2 Rivian charger at a campground that had a sign next to it saying it would be free until 2025 due to a joint grant from Rivian and some other party. I should have taken a photo of the sign, but I didn't.

OP must've been one of those kids who raised their hand at 2:59PM on a Friday to remind the teacher they forgot to assign homework. :D

I'm hoping Rivian gives Rivian owners a discounted rate, should the time come.

R1S - April 2021 preorder
I charged at Front Royal, VA RAN charger over the weekend and had the same screen as shown above and it was free. I suspect it will continue to be free until the Tesla SC network is open for all.

Front Royal RAN is in a weird spot in the parking lot of a shopping center but not close to anything. I am definitely spoiled by Tesla putting many of their SCs at a Sheetz or rest stop. But, it was free. And quite fast!!!
