Yeap!.. Except my ICE vehicles are 20+ years old.

I am also taking the road trip in July...

Do I take the 2005 Saturn Relay Mini-Van with 68k miles, that actually get decent highway MPG at 25mpg. Has decent, but not great AC. But would allow me to take out 2 seats on one side to create sort of a bed for when the driver gets tired. I dont 100% trust this van. But has yet to breakdown since we have owned it, but we have only owned it for 10 months.

Or

Do I take the 2004 GMC Envoy with 378k miles, that gets 16mpg, I trust it more than my Rivian, has great AC, better than the Rivian, and it also rides better than the Rivian.

Its 10 stops round trip to charge if I take the Rivian. 4 of those stops are free, except time. Total charging time is 9 hours.

Its 3 stops round trip to fuel the Saturn (500+ miles to a tank, 25 gallon tank)

Its 5 stops round trip to fuel for the GMC (300+ miles to a tank, 21 gallon tank)

I am really leaning towards taking one of the ICE, just for sheer convenience, and time saving.
Genuinely curious: why do you keep your Rivian if you don't trust it over two 20 year-old clunkers?

Anybody get the address verification email those week? RJ said they have resumed shipments I believe, so wondering what we are up to for ballpark address verification emails?

Its a trust thing... I have had my Envoy forever at 17 years. I know every creak, pop, groan, whats been fixed, what needs to be fixed, whats been replaced, etc.

I love my Envoy, and its a extremely rare model... The 2004 GMC Envoy XUV was the SUV that converts with a push of the button, to a truck. This variant was only made for 18 months, and then dropped. Mine is even more rare that it has the all Aluminum Block LS V8. Only 2% of the total produced in that 18 months had the LS V8...

Yea, I am a gear head.

But, I have only had my Rivian 5 months now... It has earned some of my trust.. Just dont fully trust it yet.

Perhaps I'm naive but how would Tesla know what kind of adapter is being used? I don't think there is anything "smart" in there communicating with the charger. It just passes the energy through from one set of terminals to the other, right?

If they knew, wouldn't they actively be preventing the A2Z or Lectron ones from working? Why are they working?

They can tell what kind of vehicle is on the other end, which is why you can't charge a Hyundai with the Tesla or A2Z adapters but can do a Ford or Rivian.

Now, if there's a problem, they could do an investigation, ask Rivian or Ford (for instance) if they'd shipped an 'official' adapter to the customer. If no, they could try to go after you for damages or tell you to piss up a rope for seeking damages. But as long as things go smoothly, they'll never know.

As @LivingInKaos notes, the only reason the Tesla adapter is the only 'approved' one is because it set the standard and UL hasn't approved any others. Rivian will respect that until it isn't true any longer. As soon as UL gives the stamp of approval to some other manufacturers, I'm sure they'll be allowed too, otherwise the subsidies (aka, Elon's lifeblood) for the charger network will be at risk.
They can’t know what adapter you are using. But they can say the only official one is the Tesla one.

Looks like we are taking the ICE afterall. Bought the wife a newer mini-van over the weekend, kind of spur of the moment.
2012 Toyota Sienna AWD Limited Premium. with 90k miles.

So the Saturn is likely getting sold... cant do any more tax write offs this year.

I got my R1T in May 2023. Vin is 21XXX, so I'm sure I will have to wait.

It's obviously frustrating. I would really like to get it by late July, I have a trip from Southern California to the UP in Michigan planned, and it would make the trip much easier.

I have done the trip the past two years, in 2022 in a Tesla Model 3 awd long range, and last year in my R1T. It was obviously quite a bit easier in the Tesla, although the biggest problem I had last year was an accident on the 15 stopping me on the first night, and having to spend the night in Yermo instead of Vegas, which really through the trip off.

I was able to make it work, but it is significantly easier in a Tesla. Driving back I planned a bit better, and made sure I stopped only in motels where I could charge overnight. That made a big difference. But it would be nice to have the added Tesla freedom.

If I don't get the adapter before the trip, and I can't believe I will, I'm probably going to order a lectron one. I'm worried about using it, and I was able to make the trip work last year without one, so I think I will take it as a last resort.

Some won't be happy with this, but I would actually prefer being able to pay to get priority for the official adapter (or whatever I should call the one Rivian is sending us) if need be. I really would like to get it before my trip at the end of July, but if I don't get it by then.....I really don't care all that much when I get it. We did our 10 Mammoth trips a year in the R1T, and while it would be nice to have the adapter for the ability to charge IN Mammoth, Grocery Outlet and the Looney Bean are walking distance, so it's nice to get some charge there, it is really not necessary. The biggest thing for me is this summer trip.

The same thing happened with the Tonneau cover. It would really have helped me to have it last summer. I didn't get it until early December, after several false starts.

I probably will get one of te 3rd party adapters and test it out before the trip. It will likely be a last resort. When I did the drive in the Tesla in the summer of 2022 it ended up being much easier than I expected. I didn't even bother looking for motels where I could charge. With the R1T last summer, the motel charging was a big deal, and made things much easier.

Most of the EA chargers I used were okay, but some were pretty bad. It would be great if they could improve the consistency, but I'm not holding my breath.

It seems like taking it on a big trip is the best way to get that trust.

Maybe this isn’t the trip to do it, but maybe plan something that would be appropriate.

My confidence in the R1T shot up after my two progressively longer road trips.

ICE only :(
Ha-ha. Maybe you are unaware, Tesla is supplying the adapters at cost, with zero profit built in. And they will only ship as many boxes of them as Rivian orders and pays for. Tesla is not planning to lose any money on their offer to manufacture the adapters.
Wait, is your assertion really that Ford and Rivian are intentionally angering their customers by ordering too few adapters for their customers? That's an... interesting... assertion to make.

Nobody is expecting Tesla to sell adapters at a loss. I'm not sure what the point of that sentence is.

The point is we don't know why there is a shortage of adapters. Yet, the claim was made that Tesla is purposefully limiting the rate of manufacture to slow down the transition to NACS.

Yet others claim that Tesla invited N. America to switch to NACS because Elon is greedy, and wants as much DC fast charging business as he can get.

The two narratives are not compatible with one another.

Jim Farley at Ford said they have 100k preorders and they've only sent out a couple thousand adapters. It's going to be ages before most people get these adapters unless there a massive ramp in building them and it doesnt seem like Tesla is incentivized to build them.

Do we know Tesla is supplying NACS DCFC adapters at cost to Ford and Rivian?

I agree we don’t know why the NACS DCFC adapter rollout is so slow. But I also do not think we know the details of the agreements between Tesla and other manufacturers to use the Tesla supercharger network.

RJ commented last week during an investor conference that the roll out of adapters was delayed - there is a shortage of adapters. What‘s not clear from his comment the timing of the supply improvement. Polestar CEO (Thomas Ingenlath) has since also made statement their access to Superchargers is delayed. GM also issued a statement their expected access is delayed.

It’s evident Elmo’s tantrum has impacted the roll out. More importantly, no one on this thread seems to have jumped in since the tantrum to confirm they’ve even received an email request to confirm their address and subsequently received their Tesla adapter. I’ve not seen any mention of it in the last month.

Rivian can't have both ways on this adapter issue. Either they can get us the "authorized" adapter within a reasonable time frame or they can authorize the A2Z or other high quality adapter.

If it is true that they are only sending out a thousand adapters a month, some of us won't get ours for eight or ten years. Many of us won't even have the vehicle in ten years.

Rivian needs to awaken from their slumber and get this show on the road one way or another.

You would think Rivian would evaluate/test some of the A2Z and Lectron adapters, issue some statement of suitability for use with a bunch of CYA legalese. Unless there is something in the agreement with Tesla that prohibits this activity.

They have got to do something. A ten year wait is not going to cut it.
