Charging question

Ok, forgive my ignorance. I do 99.9% of charging at home. Currently on a road trip in VT. At a RAN charger with 300kWh capacity. If I’m getting 541 miles/hr charge, in a quad motor on 22s (so a max range of 291 in All Purpose) how will it take 1hr 30 to charge to 100%? That suggests 700 odd miles of charge in a battery that can only provide 291 miles? I know the charge will rate drops off but by that much?!?!

You basically answered your own question: The Rivian charging curve will be pretty fast between 20% and 80%, but most of your time will be spent from 80% - 100%.

Yep it does drop off that fast. Most EVs do. Why do you want to charge to 100%? Charge to 70-80% and move on.

Going from 10-80% takes about 35-40 minutes. Charging from 80 to 100% takes another 40 minutes. These times can vary of course but the 80-100% is usually the same because the speed drops off so much above 80% to protect the battery. Not worth it to charge above 80% on road trips.

Change to a charge rate of kW. Mile per hour is a rate of velocity, not charge.

Miles/hr is a very strange way to show charge speed imo. I would change it to miles/hr. You have to tap the text of the charge rate if I'm remembering correctly to swap the units.
I have charged over 80, maybe like 85% maybe 90% once, but I think that's what the navi software suggested, but also I didn't mind because the charging infrastructure is still not great in the upper midwest (pre tesla access). Now that we have tesla access, and I have an adapter to use them, I'll likely not need to or want to waste time charging past 80%

If you mean kw/hr is a better term, I’m in. Though the general public doesn’t quite know what kw/hr means for their car.

I would advocate for having a “% charge/kwr remaining” label on the car. So, basically for a usable 140 kwr battery, it would say “50%/70kwr remaining”. This way gold can deviate kw/hr charge rate to their particular car.

+1 for changing the units to kW. Pretty sure you do this in the energy screen. Tap the charging rate displayed there to toggle between kW and mi/hr. You can also see kW displayed on the charger itself.

My observation has been that it can sustain close to 200kW until the SoC hits 70%. Then it starts ramping down quickly and gets really slow once you pass 80%.

I only charge 100% the night before a road trip and I let the Rivian do the rest via routing.

Even then we don't always get to 100%, either because Rivian's big battery takes more time to charge than we're in the hotel or once because The Lodge at Deadwood (SD) was on top of a mountain and we needed some unused battery capacity in the morning in order to preserve our friction brakes.

Mph is useful if you know how far you need to go. If you need to go 200 miles and are charging at 400mph, you need to wait half an hour.

Good point. I always prefer lodging where they have EV Charging. Even if it’s paid like some of the hotels we visit in MA. We pay charge point $1 an hour for parking/charging except for a nice property management co that lets me charge in their garage when I’m in town.

Campgrounds that allow EV charging are a great choice if your stuck and can’t find a charger.

I think you got a lot of feedback explaining this already, but why do you want to go to 100%? If you're not prepping for a hurricane, or need every last mile to get to your next charger, you shouldn't ever fast charge to 100%.

Just to clarify, Chargepoint is an equipment manufacture and payment processing company. They don't directly receive the fees that you pay when using charging stations on the Chargepoint network. The company that has installed a Chargepoint charging station sets the pricing. Even if they don't bill for the electricity, they pay Chargepoint a monthly fee for the management (access controls, reporting, etc...). I'm sure there is a payment processing fee for stations that have billing activated on them, but not having a "partner" account, I can't see those details.

Yeah chargepoint is great. The garage that I use sometimes is a private chargepoint station. I don’t pay there I use an employee code to add the charger to my chargepoint app.

I’m sure the hotel has a charge the one dollar per hour simply to encourage folks to move on when they have charged but it maxes out at 6 kW so I just leave it overnight. I’m not gonna go out there at 4 AM to save two or three dollars.
