Anybody used Exoshield or something similar on windshields before? Wonder how that would work...

I have an appointment on August 23 to have my windshield replaced and calibrated. Rivian recommended filing an insurance claim. When I asked about using another windshield repair/replace company, Rivian stated that the other repair/replace companies would not be able to replace and calibrate I’m due to the newness of the R1T.
One important thing they said was if at all possible, keep the windshield out of the direct sun and any rain as the temperature changes will cause an increase in the cracking. I’m in SC on the coast and it is sunny, hot and humid. We just moved into our new house from the rental and I am finally able to get the truck in a garage. The crack did continue all the way up the windshield over the course of the first week following the rock hitting the windshield. Will update after my appointment on the 23rd.

covered under insurance? How much are they saying it costs?
Yes, mine should be covered completely under insurance. Just waiting on Rivian Insurance/Nationwide to reimburse me now. Not sure why the Rivian service center can't bill the Rivian insurance directly, but apparently they can't.

It was $1,800 for the KC service center to do it. I've never had to replace a windshield, so not sure how that compares to most vehicles.

So get yourself some resin and dump it in the crack so it don't spread...
I think I heard that in a country song once.

We got a crack in our R1T windshield a few days ago. It spread almost immediately. Estimate was around $1700 and Rivian insisted that it go through the SC in Denver.

I picked up a nice star a couple of weeks ago on the highway, about 1.5"x1.5".

I used the Rain-X resin repair kit of amazon, $12. Perfect? No. But not noticeable from the outside (it was very obvious beforehand) and from the inside looks like a spec of dirt. Most importantly, it has stopped it from cracking out from the star.

I asked my local Rivian service center about windshields just a few days ago. They said they have replaced several already and that there hasn't been a problem so far with them getting replacements.

As for price, yes it is pricey. But I think you will find OE glass from any luxury car brand is equally pricey. The difference sometimes being at a certain point, third party glass manufacturers offer alternatives to OE glass at a much lower price.

Not looking forward to this. Having spent just a few months of the year in PA for the last several years, I had to repair a chip or replace a windshield almost every year. Now that I'm living here full time it will probably be at least an annual need. Now I know I won't be able to use Safelite and will have to deal with the SC about 2.5 hrs away. I just hope that thanks to USAA it continues to cost me $0 like it has every other time. The countdown to the first chip/crack starts at 12:00 TODAY when my truck is delivered!

How do you get that fully covered? Anytime I had made a claim with USAA, maybe once every 5 years, my rates skyrocketed.

It's high compared to most vehicles overall but more in the range when you compare it to just trucks and SUV's. Windshields are expensive these days.

I don't know. Maybe because it was a piece of crap Ford Escape with nothing to calibrate in the windshield. All I know is as soon as I told Safelite I had USAA, they knew right away it was covered 100% and my bill was $0. My rates never changed either. Maybe it's because I'm an old fart with over 30 years with USAA and only a couple of other claims in that whole time, lol.

Living in CO I use my windshield insurance literally every year to get a new piece of glass that’s clear of pits and cracks. Come on, Rivian!
Out of curiosity who do you use? Apparently USAA doesn't do glass coverage.

Firm believer in the resin. Usually works pretty well.

My wife shopped around for a new windshield for her '19 xc90. Was quoted 1200 from dealer and 700 from local guy. This was my first car they supposedly needed a calibration, and local guy never mentioned it to us. Car drove fine after, but some of the advanced driving features were wonky. Advanced cruise control, lane departure warning and lane keep were all off.

Dealer wanted 300 just for 2hr calibration. We sold the car back to the same dealer about 3 months later without ever having the calibration done ;)
Had a 18 XC90 and was replaced by Safelite with insurance but it never sounded the same. It felt inferior to the original glass with noise but never did a decibel reading to test. Was a lease and handed it back in but I feel like replacement glass is inferior (would love to be proven wrong).

Safelite is fine to do the labor, but NEVER use their glass. For many vehicles they source cheaper glass. It "fits" but it's not the same thickness or quality. For more obscure vehicles they often buy factory reject glass. Tons of complaints with safelite-supplied glass being thinner, noisier, and having "waviness" or other optical defects.

Safelite labor is fine to install the glass, but I would always source OEM glass through the dealer. Most dealers outsource the actual installation/labor, but you can still source the part through them and use another shop for labor.

Also, ALWAYS have the dealer recalibrate the sensors. People try to skip this, and maybe sometimes they can get away with it, but really you should recalibrate anytime the glass is replaced. It's one of those issues where you may not see warning messages and the system may not function when you need it. Don't trust the glass shop to recalibrate. Let them install the windshield, then go to the dealer for a proper calibration.

I am probably one of the few people that has had a car TOTALLED because of a cracked windshield.

Back in 2011 my wife caught a rock on her Pontiac Aztek. Windshield was 3400! I took the payout, which was 4500, had the glass replaced, and maintained my insurance.

Car has been totaled twice more since then. Took payout both times. Repaired the 1st one, and hail damage the second one. No longer have that full coverage insurance after the hail.

But back to the R1T/S glass.. This is another item thats going to make it harder for me to swallow the Rivian Blue/Red Pill. I cant call the local glass company to get the glass replaced apparently, and if I get a ticket while waiting for Rivian to do something, who pays for that? ME of course.
