Unfortunately I am

Unfortunately when I am chasing noises, I am on a mission, and often things I try have no effect. And I don't take many pictures. Plus most of these wouldn't represent well. Like me holding a bottle of silicon lube up to where two trim pieces come together on bumper. And the fender liners, only pulled as much as I needed to get at the spot, wedged my hand in there with the velcro, and got it in place....while working in dark by feel. Frunk.... lift subfloor see where it sits on tub, isolate it. Sorry..I wish I had taken pictures...
My underbody shield screws were loose also. I have a ticking noise I hear under light acceleration and decel in the back. Sounds like when you spin a prize wheel and the tab clicks. It's like a tag is on a drive shaft.. still looking. It just started at 800 miles. Tom

This list is helpful, thanks. I have a vibration in the cabin that I can't isolate. Seems like it's front passenger but not sure if it's dashboard, pillars, speakers, door or what. Don't hear it on smooth roads but it comes out if there's the slightest rough road. Has anyone found areas inside the cabin that tend to vibrate?

Sorry...my cabin has been solid.

Only outstanding issues I have are a bit of clunking/thumping in front left somewhere and a squeaking type noise across front end. Both on bumpier types of roads.

This is all very interesting. I have been surprised that when I got over even small bumps in the road I hear rattling and squeaking sounds that I am assuming is just the suspension. But based on what is being reported here, it may not be? It could be frunk rattling or something else?

I did find some wiring hitting back of frunk, and by making sure it doesn't, I did eliminate one noise. But I have been over everything almost, and I think what is left is possibly still the half shafts, something with front subframe, bearings, or even bushings.

Thanks for the tip. I'll go take a look. In your experience though, you don't think the suspension itself should be making much noise right? There are times I feel that it's louder and clunkier sounding than my Explorer was.

I don't think it should make the noises I am hearing. Something is moving that shouldn't. I hear noises that I am certain aren't the initial tire impact to a road imperfections. Some are actually the suspension or structure making noise from something moving. Like a bushing with some slop. A bearing with some slop. A subframe connected to main frame...again...with some slop. I like word slop.. excess tolerance maybe is better word. Or ball joints... I just can't find it....a service center thinks it's normal I guess. Not sure...as they didn't actually address it. Just said it was done and sent it home. And they are still present.

I have heard people say it is an EV, so no engine noise, exhaust, etc...

The noises I am still hearing, I would not hear in other vehicles I have owned, even if I had put them in neutral and shut off the engine.

I am starting to get used to them, but I still think it could be a really simple fix somewhere.....just a bad part or tolerance somewhere.

I have finally tracked down I believe all my various NVH sources. I share so that others may benefit. Now that I have solved them, the truck went from what I thought were alot of suspension noise and janky, to remarkably well sorted out and quiet sounding, and I have the 20's. Not one noise was suspension. Suspension is very quiet actually. My family says I am a bit OCD on this stuff...and they are likely right, but NVH that doesn't come from a tire impact or actual suspension design, drives me crazy.

All of these are so simple...it was just finding them that took all the effort.

Sources Of Noise And Solution:
  • #1 Carbon Fiber Skid Plates. Screws needed to be tightened.
  • #2 Frunk sub-floor. The frunk is like a giant speaker and anything that sets off a thump sound, will be heard in cabin. The sub-floor was doing just that. One of my favorite NVH tools is to use appropriate weight Velcro, but only the soft half of it. So I put a bunch on frunk, so sub-floor now lands and sits on it, rather than it sitting directly on the plastic frunk tub.
  • #3 Front Wheel Liners. This one is a bit more intense, but there were several spots where the liner impacted the frame, and bumps would cause it to thump. Removed as needed to get to them (found by tapping/hitting the fender liners to hear if it would hit anything), used my soft half of velcro technique, and made them all go away. Rivian has deadner in there, just wasn't in all needed spots.
  • #4 Driver door lower trim wasn't fully engaged on inside and was tapping over bumps. Removed and reinstalled as necessary to correct.
  • #5 Front bumper squeeked enough to be heard in cabin on big bumps. I use silicone to go between the mating panels, and most of it is now gone. Not sure this one is technically OK, putting silicone in there, but I didn't care...I was going to find it.

Now truck is arguably the quietest truck I have been in. But these little things were driving me nuts and were pretty easy to fix.
Thank you for sharing this. I haven't got my R1T yet but will be shopping for "appropriate weight Velcro" tonight on Amazon. I think I can use it in a lot of spot on my kids VW Beetle.

I have some front end squeaks at low speed under regenerative brake creep that they will fix as it's a known issue.

Some of the clunks you hear with the suspension off road and/or at higher speeds over rutty dirt roads etc - you wouldn't hear them if there was engine noise covering it up. Without the engine noise you hear everything which can give the false impression that the suspension is louder than it actually is - but there are some issues with the half shafts.

Yeah definitely good point. A quiet environment certainly makes it easier to hear all the little sounds.

From the outside, it sounds like its between the back of the frunk...and the firewall.
I took it for service for something similar to that. With the frunk open there was a noticeable metal clatter noise coming from the right side close to the firewall, Turned out to be an a/c hard line hitting the metal panel.

Luckily, since they seemed to have calmed down the compressor on startup with the latest update, I don’t hear it anymore.

Thanks for this post. Will try some out. The low speed bump squeak needs to be fixed. It’s the primary issue for possibly selling it for me.
