It's really not a big deal as long as it's not a systemic problem like the Bolt was. 7776 cells in the large pack, there's bound to be a few vehicles with bad cells.
I don’t know how systematic it is (my pack is fine so far) but when I was at the SC I saw several large crates and a gantry looking hoist? Crane? Thing.

I decided to ask..
“Are those battery packs?”
A: “Yes”

“Oh wow, they ship them separately for you to install it before delivery?”
A:”No”

Followed by some awkward silence. I didn’t count but if I had to guess maybe 5-6 crates. Assuming one pack per box.

Not great, but not terrible considering how many vehicles are on the road. A 1% failure would still be nearly 200 trucks.

Yup, 7776 of these puppies (not a Samsung but the same form factor)

I had my battery (and rear drive unit) replaced about 1k miles ago. The truck had 5k miles on it. The SC was awesome with comms. Took them 2 weeks to replace both and get the truck back to me. My failure was a fuse in the HV battery pack.

The Local SC have changed a number of battery packs.

Ugh...

For the last few weeks, I've intermittently received three battery indicator lights on a random basis. Usually, they'd remain present for an hour or two, then disappear, only to reappear at random intervals. Turtle mode is not fun, and was one of the indicators, along with two others.

After several conversations with Rivian, I brought it to the El Segundo service center. Word is I need a new battery pack. Not good, looks like an approximate 10 day turnaround time, as the batteries come from Illinois, and the weather is not so great at the moment.

I'm curious if anyone else has been through a battery replacement process, and how it went.
good luck with that 10 day turnaround. ive heard of a lot smaller, simpler things taking 3,4,5 weeks.

Guess we’ll see. I’ll hope for the two week turnaround. I agree that communication has been good so far.

Rivian replaced both my high and low voltage batteries at 800 miles (was just dead in my garage one morning.)

Took about 11 days. Communication was mostly non-existant, no loaner, but I had another car to drive...

Having said that, once I got the truck back, they did a very thorough job and I can't tell a bolt was ever turned. No new rattles or issues otherwise.

3,152 miles in now and haven't had any other issues!

Thanks for sharing and I’m sorry for the trouble. I hope all is better now. Sounds like more people than I realized have dealt with the same three indicator lights and a subsequent investigation. What’s odd is it’s led to different outcomes.

Yeah, mine was a contactor issue. From what I understand, the battery cells were just fine. I read a few others have had contactor issues as well. I don’t think it’s a widespread issue, but seems there have been a handful of reports. Hoping it’s just inevitable new manufacturer issues from which they’re learning and ironing out.

It’s definitely frustrating and concerning, but they’ll make it right. Rivian paid for a rental first time my truck was in the shop, and got me an R1T loaner on repair attempt 2 that led to the battery pack replacement.

My truck is running great now and with that new battery pack I took it off-roading for the first times 2 out of the past 3 days. Performance was stellar.

I had the same thing happen early on with my R1S. Turtle warnings etc. It turned out to be one bad cell but necessitated a complete pack replacement. It took a week, soup to nuts. It was annoying but the service center in Richmond VA (I live in MD) was top notch and very communicative.

For what it is worth, my wife's Bolt has one of the bum batteries and we have been waiting for TWO YEARS for a replacement. So a week to ten days doesn't seem so bad.

Well, I'm getting my R1T back tomorrow. About a week of waiting to get the battery replaced -- not bad at all! Apparently the cause of the problem was a "stuck open primary contactor in HV battery." Glad I'm getting it back. Sounds like others haven't had a recurrence with their replacements.

Isn't this same thing that caused a large scale recall for Ford and Mach E? I think in that case some would stick open and some closed. Open...no power dangerous on road...closed...dangerous to service techs and emergency personnel.
