How long before they started selling the large pack did they release the official range? They would still need to get the max pack tested and change from 400+ to the exact range. So I would say that they have quite a ways to go. I think they have more incentive to work on the dual motors.

What's to say they haven't already been testing a max pack for EPA range?

Would it kill Rivian to offer some sort of update on the Max Pack? There hasn't been a peep in years. Anything to let us know they're still working on it would be great. It would be nice to hear it's in testing with the EPA for final range numbers or some details on how it changes payload capacity.

I don' t think they're going to cancel it outright. RJ said in December that 20% of preorders were for Max Pack. Even if many of those preorders were persuaded to switch to the Large Pack, you're probably still looking at a double-digit percentage drop in preorders if Max Pack is canceled. My money is on Max Pack getting pushed to 2024. If they are considering a delay, I wish they would go ahead and announce it so I can change my order.
I reached out to customer support last week and they said max pack delivery updates were forthcoming in a September schedule update.

My first post to these forums was an investigative one on range. This was made before range numbers for the large pack were released, so I had to rip apart a Rivian Stories post and dig for some valuable nuggets of information to work off of. The "story" involved an R1T's trip from Texas to California with a long detour through a couple of national parks that didn't have great charging infrastructure. You can read the full thing for more details, but I essentially mapped out necessary charging locations along their route to figure out how many miles they would need, then made an educated guess at large/max pack range. Range numbers aside, I arrived at a secondary conclusion that the R1T most likely to have conducted the drive was one with a max pack. As it turned out, another poster in Austin, TX had previously seen the same R1T a few weeks before the "story" was posted and spoke with the reps making the trip who confirmed that they were driving an R1T with a max pack.

So, all of this to say that Rivian has been silently testing the max pack for a while and it's likely very refined by this point. If I had to make a guess as to why they've been quiet on it, maybe they don't want to pull attention away from the progress they've made with manufacturing the R1T in general? Perhaps they judge that teasing a "new" offering before it's ready for full production may impact the market's perception of their progress so far? Who knows. Nonetheless, I feel pretty confident that they haven't abandoned it.

If the 135kWh pack is pushing the charging envelope @ 400v ... wouldn't it be prudent to increase to the 800v platform before adding more kWh to the battery? Early reports on the Hummer EV talk about very long charge sessions even on the 800v platform. Seems like if the glass is made larger, the filling straw needs to increase in size too.

My hope/thought is that all of the news now is about ramping overall production numbers and starting R1S deliveries. Once that's complete, I hope they will have something to announce for the Max Pack.

For me, I go back and forth on between Large & max. I keep thinking Max even for the price increase because:
  1. the Max pack will enable me to drive to my vacation house without having to charge (it's 230 miles away, and has about 10,000 feet of elevation gain);
  2. additional approx 50 miles when towing;
  3. Normal driving will easily accommodate only charging to 70% SOC on a daily basis;
  4. The extra distance will be nice in a few years when the battery degrades.

those are my thoughts too, and I can't imagine they would still be taking Max pack orders if they weren't going to offer it in a reasonable time frame. They've told me my Max R1T (ordered 11/21) will be ready 2H 2023, and I (perhaps foolishly) think they are going to live up to that.

My reservation is July, 2022 and they have been saying H22023 for delivery. I'm hoping the Max Pack would be part of that time frame.

That's pretty good if that's the case. Some of us have been waiting a while longer and it seems like the Max pack, while only representing a small number of us, still is significant enough to keep the dream alive.

I think they'll ship it eventually. Might get delayed a bit more but I think they'll beat Chevy's 400 mile range Silverado EV to market

Are any Max pack holdouts reconsidering in light of Tesla's rumored move to make Superchargers available to all?

Is there any reason to launch it before then when there's no competition at this point? Aside from making customers happy...

I would think launching before the competition would be better, especially if customers think the competition will provide 400mile options soon.

I originally signed up for a large, and switched to Max, and back and forth a couple times, currently on max. The delay doesn’t greatly bother me, helps me feel better about Rivian iron out service/software/build challenges. Also, main reason for wanting a max pack is for day trips, 150 miles each way, without needing to stop and charge. If/when Tesla opens up, it helps, but it’s still a needed stop to charge. I also wouldn’t count on a Tesla charger option until it actually happens.

That's a pretty good reason. On top of that, I've got this huge pile of money I'd like to hand over to Rivian but they're not getting it until they produce the Max Pack. There are probably 15k other people like me. If they wait too long, that pile of money might end up with Tesla for a long range Cybertruck. I think we all know that's going to be a long wait but the clock is ticking...
