When are we getting rear screen apps (YouTube, Netflix, etc) on Gen 1? This seems like the ultimate no brainer. There’s an excessively nice screen back there. What is the holdup?

I could be mistaken, but I don’t recall Rivian ever promising this would happen, despite many here requesting it. So possibly never?

Likely never. The screen is in a terrible location and way to small to make it worth it.

No one is watching YouTube or Netflix on that rear screen, it's too small.

Great size for HVAC, music controls, terrible size for video.

Might be nice to see where you are in the current trip and time to destination as a nav tile/view similar to what you find on airlines.

I would expect never. Primary use case for rear screen entertainment is kids and the screen is too low for kids in car seats, not to mention increasing the likelihood of car sickness. Kids older than that have their own devices and onboard wifi for a more pleasant viewing experience.

They already have it...it's called an iPad and a holder to attach it to the rear seat.

Rivian is currently focusing their main efforts on finalizing the R2 platform which is literally a make or break product for the company. I don't recall this being on the feature roadmap and this is really a corner-case use scenario that would take resources off of other more important features. If this was a feature, I'd feel sorry for those parents using it as now they'd have to listen to Barney the Dinosaur for the 15th time as there's no way to individualize the sound.

No thanks.

I believe Wassym touched on it during an AMA on reddit or similar not all that long ago. He mentioned it was coming, I'll look for the source later.

I do agree with the sentiment of most though, that it's a pretty small screen and the usefulness of such a feature would be questionable.

I have a Tesla Model X. It has a rear screen in the same location. That screen has YouTube and Netflix etc., and is used every time the kids are in the car.

Rivian made a huge deal about front screen video casting, which I never understood because who is hanging out in the front seat casting to their screen? That’s such an edge use case, whereas the rear screen is an actual use case.

Yes, you could let the kids fight over an iPad in the back - but Tesla already defeated this issue and the rear screen that is already sitting there plays apps and just works. It’s really bizarre that Rivian is not yet doing this.

I have an ancient android tablet that runs YouTube fine. Now that cellular access is a paid service, what is holding back Rivian from unleashing 2000s era technology for our Rivians?

I think it should function on both screens -- it certainly does on all new Tesla models despite the screen being in a similar spot and similarly small.

As for "who watches on the front screen?" I do all the time. It's convenient to watch something while at a charger. Additionally, I often sit in my car during my lunch hour or if I have to wait somewhere for an extended period of time. It's great to be able to watch something while waiting.

This would be a nice option to have. Don't like it? Don't use it. My four kids in the back would sure appreciate the option though on long road trips.

I would mind it either. It would have another cool factor to the car and a good distraction on though long road trip while the kids are eatting in the car.

does the rear screen have it's own bluetooth module? I don't think it does, I know the new Y does and you can hook up bluetooth devices and have the kids watch netflix with headphones, wish Rivian thought of that....

I doubt the rear seat screen has any electronics of it's own. Almost certainly driven by the same computer as the front seat (like Rivian)

Whether you use a Bluetooth device in the front seat or the back you're most likely pairing with the same computer and Bluetooth chip. The only difference is the computer is smart enough to know which devices to expose on which screen and which device to send audio to from what source.

Rivian could ABSOLUTELY do the same (given the CPU could handle that)
