They planned it early on that Gen 1’s WOULD NEVER get Hands Free driving.

Knew it as soon as I traded in my 22 for a 23 and the 23 no longer had the driver monitor camera. No reason for a camera if there’s nothing to monitor…
Before I bought my 2022 they told me that the R1T would have hands free driving upon release.

This was one of many questions I asked before I bought it. I did accept delivery knowing it wasn't out yet.

But, there was no indication back in 2022 that it wouldn't have hands free.

The current version is very annoying because it reminds you every few seconds to touch the steering wheel. I know eyes-off for the gen 1 is not going to happen (I'm not sure I'm ready for eyes-off anyway)
Someone remind me, but wasn't part of the issue was the Gen1 camera was something like 240p resolution? It couldn't make out your eyes on your face even in the best lighting, if you were wearing glasses, etc.

Except that the hands free update is currently dling in my Gen 2. I think the chances are better this time.
This is exactly what happened to the 1" thin TV I paid a premium for 10 years ago. It was so cool for about 2 years. Then you could get a 80" TV 1" thin for $500. The line in the sand of the haves and have nots has been drawn. We G1s are the poor sods now.

If rivian is just using hands free mobileye driving, then what they are talking about in the video are pretty blatant lies. Claiming that the current version of their driving is their latest AI advancements.

Literally all the same BS they sold with Gen 1.
this is what Rivian advertised for Gen1 and promised it will come through OTA. i.e reason early build has interior camera to track eyes.
Yep ... pretty disappointed as I purchased assuming that these features would be coming based on the HW that was sold to us.

The video talked about them not having the full stack before (Gen 1) so they had limitations as the HW manufacturers gave them limited control. Rivian many not have known JUST how limiting it would be or how flexible the HW manufacturers would be in providing updates to give them more capabilities. Clearly the HW man. did not.

That is why in Gen 2 they wanted the full stack so they didn't have limitations. Key point from the video completely being ignored.

not a key point because rivian has the "full stack" in terms of their own compute (nvidia)

That's not what they are using here. In fact they are using a mobileye camera and computer which will not even be used for rivian's own driving in the future.

What rivian is doing is passing off Mobileye technology as their own and promising future upgrades on this technology, when in fact the Mobileye product is EOL and in some ways like tesla, the new product might be a step backward

Based on that video of RJ, it sounds like they aren't using mobileye.

sounds like they are lying to me. That's the point of my comment. Just simply cover up the mobileye camera when you get the new software update and see if the driving still works.

If it does not, then rivian is blatantly lying

Watch again. He said they haven't shown anything that have been done by their hundreds of people working on ADAS yet. He revealed his own lie. I am betting my money on not seeing anything more than the Mobileye system until they ramp up R2 production. They will say the same thing a year later hyping up their mystery ADAS system.

It is worth mentioning that the chinese have spun up their self driving quite quickly. Some of the cars also using nvidia systems surpass tesla in features.

Tesla just launched into the chinese market and it has revealed that tesla has some issues with localized driving (traffic lanes, bus lanes, traffic lights), but the fundamental driving quality is supposedly in a different league.

maybe making smooth, good quality driving is hard

Chinese driving is generally not smooth and maybe that's why the other systems are acceptable.

I don't know if I will ever be 100% comfortable with a full self-driving mode. Using the semi-autonomous version in my Gen 1 makes me a tad nervous in San Diego traffic. I can't always predict what ridiculous moves some driver will make. I, perhaps irrationally, don't trust that my truck will. Anyway, full self-driving is not a feature I would spend money to have.

Same. I’m about to get a Gen1 R1S to go with our Gen2 R1T, and at the end of the day, while I’m happy we’ll get to see how far the Gen2 can go, living in rural Maine, I really can’t imagine ever feeling comfortable with self driving.

mobileye is driving off those cameras so it's obviously not an issue
