I won’t argue with those facts, but does your brake pedal not physically move like mine does?
Apparently it does, but I'm only noticing it if I let ACC bring the truck to a stop in traffic. But as hard as it brakes, waiting until the last second, I don't usually let it stop on its own. If I see traffic coming to a stop I'll disable ACC and coast in gently...which is another issue. I often regen to a stop gently enough that the brake lights don't even come on and I noticed that if you use the steering wheel buttons to lower the ACC set speed it'll decelerate at a decent rate, but again the brake lights don't come on. I'm well aware that EVs rely on acceleration values to trigger the brake lights, but it seems like Rivian is using numbers at the upper limit of what regulation allows and I'm not a fan.

This right here! The brake pedal moves up and down a lot when slowing and stopping in my truck. I was surprised to see it and don’t understand why it’s necessary.
Because it is not an electronic pedal, IMHO

I checked my pads this am just to be sure. 20k. Seem like very little wear. Never see any brake dust. Checked rotors after a drive....cold to touch.

All just as a data point.

nothing else strange with the truck. Initially they said it might have to do with me towing but I have only towed about 3-4K of the miles. Something is definately a bit weird, the question is if it is something with my vehicle / just in regions where it's wet / cold and things rust or if it's a bigger issue. We'll find out.
I am bringing my truck to Chelsea for this same issue i think. My brakes have been sticking and rubbing and there is uneven wear on the rotors. Did they end up covering anything else under warranty?? Doesnt seem like this should be happening after ~30,000 miles, especially when the brakes are barely used. How much did this end up costing? Thanks.

They covered the labor but not the parts for this, can't recall the total since it's been a while but I think it was in the $1200 range.... and agree this should not have happened.

Got it, thanks. Did they say how one prevents this from happening in the future? Do we just need to get our brakes and rotors checked and cleaned every 5,000 miles here in the northeast or something?

Nothing said at the time, they told me that this was very unusual and that they had elevated it for the main office to take a look at. I'm wondering if this happened because I towed a trailer for some long stretches (although I don't use the brake pedal when I tow either)

As a data point, was noticing a slight grinding noise after some off roading and assumed it was a pebble between the inner rotor shield and rotor. As the days passed, and it wasn't going away, decided to pull the wheel and investigate.

Turns out the inner pad was worn completely at the base, beginning to score the inner face of the rotor, with the majority of the pad still left at the top. So worn to resemble a door stop.
Rivian R1T R1S Brake pad wear? 20240420_070729

Rivian is going to try to squeeze me in either today or tomorrow to investigate/repair which is awesome, they've been fantastic in getting this sorted so A+ on that front.

What I suspect is either the top of the pad was bound in some way, or the caliper has some air in it, causing it to only push inward with the lower pistons? Grasping at straws, but will update after it's repaired.

Definitely update us on what the SC says. Could be some corrosion or something on the bottom-right piston causing it to be sticky. I also have a Corvette with 6-pot front brakes and it's not uncommon for folks to have wear like this, but I certainly wouldn't expect these kind of issues so early in the life of the vehicle.

Agreed, but I've also done a solid amount of off-roading and regen reduction on some of the long stretches is common and have used the friction brakes to compensate. Still considering the wear, or lack of, on the outer pad, this is definitely an anomaly.

Definitely the below.

I've had pistons seize on my front brake calipers of both motorcycle and bicycle from lack of use and exposure to the elements.

This whole issue highlights the importance of checking pads when changing/rotating tires. Luckily my truck was good at 42.5k! More wear left than my brand new motorcycle brakepads.

General rule of thumb is 3mm is minimum, I don't know if Rivian has a spec? So 4mm and 5mm have some life left in them, you would have to judge when they need replacing. Seems to me you could get another 3k-5k miles?

What is your regen setting? It seems early for brake pads if you are using full regen?
What's the original thickness?

I'm circling back a year later. I now have 52,000 miles. Still am not touching my brake pedal unless it's an emergency braking situation.

Started hearing a rubbing/metal noise at low speed a couple days ago. With the wheel mounted i could clearly see the front pad was fine so i kinda just figured it was mud or a rock stuck in the pad and it would go away.

At the same time I was waiting on my new Michelin LTX Platinum 275/65/20 to get mounted, so I figured I would do a deeper dive once I had to change my rims out.

Took them off today and was pretty easy to find the problem. Both outside pads seem unused and the inside ones are toast. Very hard to see with tire on. If one side was the way i would thing its a caliber issue. Both sides? Im really unsure. Waiting on Rivian service to get back to me after opening up a ticket today.

I would say I have some issues with my calibers.

Once again.... I don't touch my brake pedal.

Oy that's scary. I also get the rotational rubbing noise after driving in snow. I always thought it was some ice/snow stuck on the rotors... Guess I'm going to check my pads during my next tire rotation

That makes sense, inside calipers receive the pressure before outside, so more likely for outside to seize, or just get less "push" over time. Likely why they suggest doing a hard brake at least weekly, keep those fluids moving and prevent seized calipers. Moving parts are lubricated parts
