A rock must’ve chipped the edge or Rivian installed a chipped windshield and I didn’t notice it until now.

I am debating whether to have Safelight come out and look at this. I would be paying my $100 comprehensive deductible for them to come out; I’m not certain it’s necessary or would be an effective to prevent further cracking. Thoughts?

Safelite is awesome. I would at least have them take a look.

I have a chip in the middle of my windshield and Safelight told me they do not repair Rivian? When I called Rivian, the initial quote was over $4000 and I decided not to replace. After a few months, Rivian lowered the price to $1800 to replace the windshield which I will do in Atlanta in October.

The chips that are repairable are usually not on the edge of the glass. They use a small vacuum mold attachment to suck repair resin into the crack. If that edge doesn’t cause any issues probably best to leave as it

I had a chip and safelight sealed it but now it has 6 inch cracks on each side. Hasn't spread, but looks much worse than just the chip.

Be aware that injecting the star or chip may count as an insurance claim just like replacement. That happened to me on a previous vehicle. I would ignore it unless it spreads. Also, I have a 12” crack on my R1T and the $1800 price noted above is what I’m getting. I got varying info but currently it seems that SC’s can do it all but authorized repair centers can’t reprogram after install. Mobile service can, though.

I have a chip in the middle I’m considering fixing and while at the local glass shop the guy happened to mention they can’t fix stuff near/at the edges.

For what it's worth, my experience is that chips NOT on the edge of the windsheild are an easy and cheap repair. I have always had them repaired as soon as I notice them at a local glass shop. I drive up, they inspect and repair in about 30 minutes.

I know people who have repaired chips with DIY kits with success. I also know people who had the chip repair cause the windshield to crack, the glass place warns me each time that it's a possible outcome of the repair.

So far, one chip in my whindshield, repaired.

I caught a chip in the middle of my glass last year and use a $20 repair kit from an auto parts store. It stopped it from cracking and it's about 80-90% gone (I still see it but no one else notices).

That one looks to be on the edge and likely can't be chip repaired. That being said, it doesn't look to be cracking at this point. If it were me, I'd let it ride for a while and see if it develops a crack or not. If it cracks, then replace, if not...keep driving it and call it wear & tear.

I had a "little" star near the bottom drivers side. I have Nationwide and glass is covered with no deductible. They came out and said it was too big and that they could not repair it. They also told me that Rivian has not released any after market parts and Rivian would need to replace it. I made my appointment with Rivian in August and the next available was November 14th. Well since then my little star has grown all the way up to the top and starting to go the right. Also Nationwide said that Rivian does not deal with insurance(even though I got my insurance through them) and I would have to pay up front and then get reinmbursed.

Safelite wasn't able to order the glass for me. They booked 2 weeks out, then on the day of the apt, called me and told me they had to cancel because they couldn't get it.

Go to the Rivian.com site and search for local repair shops that they work with (Not Rivian Service Centers). RSCs won't work with your insurance.. but Rivian has partner repair shops everywhere that do.

Have done windshield chip repairs on my other EV, DIY style. Holding up just fine. At least, it is not spreading.
My auto insurance gives me full glass coverage (headlights, mirrors, windows, pano roof) with NO deductible on my R1S for $228 a year. Total piece of mind. Glass issues including replacement have become a total don't-care, and nobody but Rivian shall replace anything glass when the time comes.

Your ding on the very edge looks tricky to repair.

Thanks for all the advice. Since I already filed a $2,000 claim for the roof glass replacement, all the more reason to let this go.

I would let it go and wait for one that requires replacement. I have one i got my first week with my truck and had it repaired right away. Rivian asked if i wanted the glass replaced when i was in for another service, but I figure with how fragile the glass is it is bound to happen again so why not wait until i get one bad enough to force replacement.

I do not see any lines in this chip, usually the ones that spread have lines radiating out fron the center that tend to grow as the windshield heats and cools.

I would ignore that one unless some lines start showing up which looks like a low probability from that picture.
