Lots of complaining about nothing...

Tesla is still the only place to get windshields replaced for any Tesla and it works well. Since a windshield is covered in comprehensive the process is really easy... I had 2 replaced on a Tesla and had payment before the service even happened. The biggest Isse is calibrating the cameras that require a service visit. So it actually would cost more to have a 3rd party do replacement.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
I'm here to vent and commiserate!

I'm a huge fan of my R1S... just this week I told someone who asked how I liked it ... That "it changed my life" (I said it with out thinking and it kind of made me second guess my answer in the moment)

However, maybe the universe is telling me to pump the brakes...

Monday an unknown rock chip revealed itself by way of the car wash, leading to a quickly advancing crack...

The positive part of this is that the Las Vegas service center is able to get me in this week!

THE OVERWHELMING NEGATIVE is that the full cost of a replacement piece of glass is $1700 installed!!!

There is no other alternative to such a vulnerable part of the car, no mobile glass, wont sell to other more reasonable cost installers, wont release the sensor calibration software!

Coincidentally the service centers also doesn't work with most insurance providers to file glass claims!

Coming from a Jeep JL Wrangler I am no stranger to bad glass and frequent windshield repair! $700 bucks a pop is the common cost in Jeep world, but $1700 only at the service center is Highway ROBBERY !!

THIS ASPECT OF RIVIAN IS UNSUSTAINABLE! - FIX THIS BULLSHIT

That is some bullshit considering the CyberTruck’s windshield, which is that largest on a production vehicle, costs $1,900 to replace.

Safelite was even trying to pull some BS with EV drivers by charging them extra to recalibrate their cameras after a windshield replacement. Do you want to know how to recalibrate your cameras? You drive around until they’ve calibrated. That’s it! So they were charging hundreds of extra dollars just to drive someone’s vehicle around. What a rip off!

Mine gets replaced tomorrow by Phoenix service center, $1800 for my R1T. Will have to submit to insurance to get reimbursed.

Rivian claims they have to recalibrate, even if a third party does the install. Got my Mach E window replaced recently and the guy drove it a couple of miles to do the self calibration. Insurance paid directly, I do not even know what the cost was.

Ya, this is a very normal price for a vehicle with camera/radar under the windshield. My wife's mach-e was $1600 both times we had to replace it, my prior company vehicle was a Subaru outback and it was $1500, These are unfortunately normal prices for OEM windshields with safety tech underneath that needs to be recalibrated.

I mentioned this in another thread today, but it's even more relevant when comparing a huge windshield to the tiny 5"X4" piece of mirror glass in your side view mirror...

Was at my bro in-law's auto repair shop yesterday, I saw a side view mirror glass (just the actual mirror glass, not the housing, motors, anything else.. just the small piece of mirror glass that sits inside your side view mirror) sitting on his desk. I was looking at it then I picked it up, he said "be careful, that thing was $550" his cost! $550 for the outside mirror glass. Imagine how much it would have been if the whole housing assembly needed to be replaced? Parts pricing is insane right now!

When a side view mirror glass is $550 (jobber cost), then $1,700 for a windshield installed and cameras calibrated doesn't seem so bad.

Progressive has said as much... but I'm sure it will be convoluted from start to finish
This is how Rivian insurance - Nationwide here - does it. You pay out of pocket and get re-imbursed after. Was easy peasy for me. Just filed the claim, had the work done, then submit the receipt. Even if/when Safelite is trained and has the equipment to do the calibrations post installation, I wouldn't expect them to be a ton cheaper. My Audi windshield is about the same cost as the Rivian one thru them because of the added calibrations ($2100). The main reason for Rivian to partner with them to take over the windshields is to relieve the SC's of that work when they could be doing something more vehicle related.

Quite sure that is untrue and Safelite can replace them.

I mean I am not happy if I have to replace the windshield at a $1700 cost...
I also went with the $-0- replacement glass with my insurance. They will deposit the funds directly to my bank as soon as I provide them a picture of the receipt. So not complaining... to much.

That said, its a LOT cheaper than the windshield in my wife's Pontiac Aztek GT..
My insurance company tried totaling it out due to the cost of the windshield.
Luckily there was a law on the books that a vehicle could not be totaled out for glass damage alone.

The cost of that windshield on that 2001 Pontiac Aztek GT... $3800! Granted this was 14 years ago.

The cost has now come down to Rivian levels at $1700 -IF- the glass is even available.

With these newer vehicles, it only makes sense to have glass coverage when you can - not just comprehensive. Many policies don't give more than $800 for a windshield on comprehensive and that just doesn't cut it these days. Insurance needs to catch up on that one.

Tesla Model Y. In three years replaced the windshield twice at a price of $1400 each time and top glass at a price of $1700.

Quickly learned at insurance renewal time not to ever used insurance for glass replacement even if you have glass coverage cause they jacked up the premium right away. Tried to switch insurances but they were all hitting me with elevated premiums for the glass claims.

I had a rock crack my R1S windshield and, yes, it cost $1800 to replace. But my insurance paid beyond my deductible within a matter of a few weeks. With the recalibration of the cameras being quite important, that doesn't seem awful these days. Everything is expensive.

Let me add a strong positive comment about Rivian's service on this. The crack happened the first day of a 3 day drive from Houston to Southern California. It happened on a Sunday morning. At the first charging stop, I took some pix and uploaded them via the app for a service request. Remember, this was Sunday morning, and within 15 minutes I was getting a call from Rivian Service to talk me though the options and process. I was gone for a few weeks. When I got back, I called Rivian Service and they got me a slot within 3 days and the service was completed in 1 day. That is far better service, from start to finish, than most car companies are willing to do!

2014 Subaru Outback windshield from Safelite was $1200 to $1500. Someone I know got it done last year. My TL's aftermarket Pilkington windshield was $300 in 2014. OE Part cost was over $700 at the dealer. Installed it would have been $1000 or more. What we need are aftermarket options.
