No, it's play in the half shaft—see previous posts in the thread—which is what Rivian's ting washer recall aimed to address (but not a permanent fix).
I was referring to the other end which was what he was moving around on the video. The tulip CV going into the drive unit has some play. The stub shaft on the outer CV seems to be a clunking issue as well but I've never looked at the design. Usually there is no room for movement on the outer stub because there's a nut and cotter pin holding it tight. I don't know how rivian could have gotten this time tested design wrong.

As an update to my two prior posts, my replacement DM R1T (only 2,500 miles - hardly a significant amount) is still absolutely quiet. But again only time will tell. My prior Launch Edition QM R1T didn’t start exhibiting problems until around 3,000 miles and at 12,500 miles, after much very unpleasant fighting with Rivian, was replaced. Bad front drive units, half shafts and subframe. While a pure guess on my part I suspect this is why Rivian now manufactures the drive units in house. But what do you do with the inventory of the old units?

Yes, Bosch supplied the parts for the quad motors, and then Rivian assembled them from what I understand…so obviously some issues when they were assembled at the factory which led to some of us unfortunately getting ones with greater tolerances. Booo

I have the same noise coming from my front left. I dropped it off to Rivian today. The lead tech went for a ride with me and heard it also. I really like Rivian of Salt Lake they are top notch. I am sure they will figure it out. When they do or if they do I will post up.

Yup, attached it to the service quote. I am sure they will take care of it now… just frustrating that when I first requested them to take a look at specifically the half shafts and demonstrated the clunk when going over bumps they said it was Normal. Again, sure they will sort it now that I had to pull apart the underside and fully illustrate the failure.
I'm following this. Please update this after your visit. I might remove my panel and check before I take it in, but your driveway video sounds exactly like mine. It's all low speed. After you're moving -- it's forgotten about.

I just checked and mine is the exact same way - just on the driver’s side
It only seems to be the front left. I had a few good bangs this morning over bumps.

It's the only issue I have with this truck. It's new, so I just started researching this. Gonna test the half-shaft by hand with the wheel cranked to the side and test mine.

I'm waiting to see if anyone has had this addressed.

This is my complaint. Truck has great suspension and will take corners at high speed better than a truck that weighs 7000lbs should... .that being said the front end sounds, and feels like a box of bolts going over speed bumps.

While I tool off the aero guard by the front drive units you can probably just slide under the car and squeeze your arm in to check any play. In my case, and others I have talked to, the 'play' will occur nearest to the drive unit.. make sure to check that side of the half shaft.

So I was able to crank the wheel over far enough to get in there and BOTH of my half shafts have that the side to side clunk when moved. It seems like spacer would have solved the issue during manufacturing. I might end up having to live with it. Let me know what you find out from the service visit.

Not entirely correct, It will have springs, but per shots of the infotainment, there are suspension compression settings (firm and soft as an example) but you're correct, there is no air or ride height adjustable suspension
yeah, its supposed to be adaptive suspension (soft/firm type changeability)but not an air suspension like the R1

Update: and a sanity check from the group:

I have my car into service (been there two weeks). I created a ticket for the clunk on my front left of my vehicle which I believe I have nailed down to the front driver half shaft having excessive play in the inboard connection. I attached this video to the ticket (forgive me saying rear in the video, it's the front).

After Rivian telling me that my 'clunk' / 'thunk' that I am experiencing is "N"ormal on a prior service visit I took it upon myself to further diagnose this and provided the above video along with the write up in the ticket. Today After inquiring into the status of my repair here is the message I received.

Am I being unreasonable... crazy.. both or neither? This is a somewhat known issue with gen 1 R1s

I literally love everything about this truck but I have spent the last 8,000 miles trying to get it to not have a front end clunk when going over bumps, speed bumps, etc...

super frustrated.

They eliminated some noises and clunks when they replaced half shafts and hubs on mine…but still get a clunk occasionally. I’ve kinda given up after two years.

Seriously laughed out loud at fixing the passenger side, thanks for that! I'm frustrated with you and will probably have the same unfortunate experience with service here again in a few weeks. Fought Tesla for years on the Model X acceleration shudder too until they finally came up with a solution.

It's not worth it... There's no fix as of yet... I just stopped trying(after 4 visits to the SC) and I go over bumps at 30+mph, so the suspension don't have time to oscillate, it just hops over them at higher speeds(it's fun too ;)). I'm sure it's not good for the suspension but it's good for my mental health :CWL:

My two other friends that have R1s have a dead silent front end.
