Unfortunately yes. And how they're applied seems to be completely inconsistent, despite Lukas' best efforts.

Some only get hit with a $39 charge, others get hit with a $54 or even $104 charge. I feel bad for him.
But surely we will tax our way into prosperity, and also, the economy LOVES unpredictable costs!

I got the longitudinal harness about five days before this bullshit started. I saw one report about a $130-some tax for the harnesses early on.

Also, still no Comma shipment...guess they weren't actually in stock? I was going to be doing a demo for a group at the Republic of Slowjamastan (seriously) over Thanksgiving weekend.

Is there an easy way to disengage comma/open pilot and use the Rivian system, or not unless you physically disconnect harness?

It's as easy as pressing a button.

Trying to wrap my mind around the whole Comma concept. Do I really need/want self driving? I do like to drive and I don’t live in an area where there are many pre-mapped roads. On the rare occasions when I have used my Gen 1 R1T Drivers+, it has been somewhat of a novelty and a bit entertaining, something I might be able to get used to - I guess. Maybe, like for some, it would come to be something I can’t live without. Or, maybe it would just be a $1000 waste of money. It’s kind of a case of ya don’t know what ya don’t know. But, I am intrigued.

I’m a little confused about this whole lateral/longitudinal issue. What are we talking about here? What advantage does the Xnor, or whatever, adaptor offer and at what cost?

Why would one want that additional Comma Power adaptor to keep the Comma powered on at all times? Isn’t there already enough concern about vampire drain? What advantage would there be to have the Comma always on?

First things first, the Comma doesn't need pre-mapped roads. Hell, it doesn't really even need roads.

Lateral is steering, long is acceleration and braking. Using the XNOR harness, you can use the Openpilot Longitudinal control, and select from dozens of driving models to suit your preference. Without it you get the stock Rivian ADAS longitudinal performance. The harness is expensive though, over $350.

The Comma power only provides alternate 12v power to the device, otherwise the stock harness pulls off of the AXM and has caused issues for a small subset of Comma users. The Comma will timeout and shut down shortly after you park. No drain issues.

Thank you for the clarification. I was clear on the ability to navigate unmarked roads, even trails. That is huge! The ability to visualize and analyze the environment like a human is amazing. Good to know the Comma Power is not a drain issue. The ability to customize longitudinal behavior seems like a winner, but $350! Yikes. Last question - what is the AXM? Oh, wait. One more question - can I borrow a $1000 😂

AXM is the Autonomy eXperience Module. It's the Rivian computer that handles ADAS and where the Comma gets access to the CAN signals for interception and injection.

Hi I just ordered a Comma 4 and want to run it without the XNOR harness to start. I may very likely upgrade to it in the future but will see first. How should I run power to the Comma to avoid issues? Is there another harness to buy? Thanks!

The XNOR fuse tap will be your best bet, but you can run the Comma Power (which should be included? It was with the 3x anyway...) as well. Don't forget to modify the stock Comma harness to disconnect from the AXM 12v.

A lot of this (and much more) is covered in the Comma Rivian Installation Tips document that a bunch of users have built up over the past few months. It was written with the Comma 3X in mind, but it's still 99% applicable to the Comma 4 as well. It's located here:

Folks with Gen2 and onward shouldn’t need to consider purchasing 3rd party driving assist devices unless you are fine getting rid of it a year later. At least wait until Rivian AI day in December and see when do they plan to release hands-off everywhere feature on Gen2 vehicles.
It doesn't always work like this. UHF is supposed to be a driver replacement which means it lane changes automatically, takes turns, etc. maybe someone doesn't want this

If they want the car to go a set speed and not change lanes, that's what comma does

Tesla has only recently surpassed comma.ai because FSD works so damn well. When it didn't work well sometimes you just want a simple driver assist

Good to see they're continuing to release new products. Maybe I'll pick one up after my warranty expires so service can't point to it as a problem. By then hoping for a Comma 5 or Comma 6.

I don't foresee Gen1 vehicles getting any substantial updates moving forward. Seems like Rivian might have already hit the limit of the capabilities of the existing Gen1 ADAS?
Im sure I’m not the only one but I’m significantly bummed about the lack of automation for us gen 1 owners going forward. I love my Rivian but I really feel they significantly over promised on the ability to grow the automated driving over time with OTAs. I feel like we hit the ceiling way too fast. 😔
