It's great to hear that Gen 1 and Gen 2 dampers and springs are interchangeable and repairs are done with improved Gen 2 parts.

As far as rolling/phased in updates, I have a 2024 Gen1 R1S QM, vin 31xxx. In this late build, my rear Rivian/Monroe shock PN is PT00055237-E. Does anyone have a gen2 PN for the rear shock? And where is the PN on the rear air spring?
What is the part number of your front damper?

To the OP:

Thanks for your post.

I think you are correct that there have been rolling changes.

My Gen 1 vin is 232xx purchased 11/23, but built 9/23.
The only real noise I have noticed is the air compressor working and some clicking with leveling. I never noticed half shaft or damper clunking or the like.
A bit boaty ride just after purchase, the OTA suspension update made a huge difference and my R1S has been driving like my previous LX470. ( what did they do ?)

Based on your post and the Munroe live video that you linked, I inspected my suspension:

I have the Gen 2 Casted front cradle
I have the Gen 2 knuckles
I have Gen 1 struts/dampers
I have Gen 1 jounce lines.
Rear seems the same for Gen 1
My undercarriage protection is not magnetic.
(and thats just what I could see without disassembly)

So yes it would appear thet my later build Gen 1 R1S has incorporated some Gen 2 Parts.
While the dampers are Gen 1 ( not Tapered), I wonder if they had been improved upon as well by that time.

I was surprised when I recently test drove A Gen 2 Trimax. While it may have been a bit smoother there was really no earth shattering difference IMO. In fact, the launch in my Gen 1 feels faster, but I know that is subjective.

For me the major Gen 2 difference was the Camera resolution !!

Thanks again, interesting thread.

At some point I might ask for a test drive of a gen 2 R1T and see if the suspension is improved enough from those parts to ask what it's going to cost me to get those changes.

I had the jounce lines fixes and the knuckle fix, but the dampers and half-shafts are still OG. Fixing the half-shaft chatter would be nice.
Can you describe the half-shaft chatter you experience. I had my front half shafts replaced once and my rears twice, which finally fixed it. It was the right rear half shaft and the first 2 trips I had lazy techs, but I am not sure my issue is similar to yours.

I would also note that my suspension is super noisy (August 22 delivery). Coming from a TRX at first I babied my R1T because it sounded like it was going to break driving it hard like I did the TRX, but now I just ignore the noise and drive it like a truck. Would love to get rid of the noise though. Its honestly embarrassing just going over speed bumps in a parking lot. That said, its not really a squeak, but more of a clunk or clank. Regardless it doesn't sound good, but I always just chalked it up to being so complex and capable.

@dradam thanks for the info! The comparison in ride quality between late Gen 1 and Gen 2 is particularly insightful. I read so many complaints about the Gen 1 R1S ride so I was surprised that mine seemed pretty good. It’s becoming clear there were both software and hardware changes that improved the ride of the later Gen 1 R1S. I look forward to driving a Gen 2 at some point, will be fascinating to compare.

What are the part numbers on your dampers, front and back?

do your front dampers have these part numbers?

Right: C10002754-G
Left: C10002752-G

I’m guessing these were the problematic ones.

Luke, the head of vehicle dynamics at Rivian, mentioned that the rear dampers were redesigned for Gen 2. So, likely the biggest changes in ride quality would have to do with the updated rear dampers.

Looking around, I’m seeing these part #s for rear dampers:

2022 Lauch Edition?

C200001904-H

C200002742-G

C200002742-H

PT200002742-J

2023 R1S (Aug 23/vin 18xxx)

C200055237-D

2024 R1S (vin 31xxx)

PT00055237-E

@Donald Stanfield what is the part number of your rear dampers? Would be nice to know what the Gen 2 part # is.

What I’d like to know is what the current part # is for a Gen 2 rear damper. Any Gen 2 R1S owners care to take a look in their rear wheel well and find out?

Pro Tip: put your suspension in the highest setting before you look as that will make it easier to see the part # sticker.

So one key observation, took a look at a G2 Tri and the rear damper PN was the same as our original G1 quad rear damper.
