How noisy is your front end?

Just dropped off my car for service and picked up a loaner with same wheels. Definitely no weird noises from the front at low speeds or when reversing. Overall the suspension seems tighter, but difficult to assess since it was raining very heavily. I’ll update when I drive it in more quiet conditions.

Edit: The truck actually has 20” all terrains. The ride quality is noticeably more composed than the 21s. I always thought it was supposed to be the opposite.

I've found that the sound is masked in the rain or when the streets are wet.

Interesting. I really thought my drive to the service center was the best the truck has sound and felt in days.
Yeah, not sure if it's just the sound of the wet that masks it or if the water its acting as a lubricant / barrier to whatever produces the sounds.

I wonder if active noise cancellation could remove much of this. I swear I can even feel in steering wheel and it does seem to set off a rattle or two in cabin too.

I could potentially help mask it but would we really want that? My 95 Cherokee with 180,000 miles and original suspension had a quieter and tighter suspension then my R1. I really think there's something with the design that needs to be improved. I have wondered if this is all related to that article that came out late last year which said that Rivian is talking with a new suspension supplier.

I agree. I am sure something in mine is looser than it should be. The fact some say theirs are silent, suggest production variances are effecting some of us and not all of us.

I'm certain there's variances... I have a buddy with one and his is definitely quieter. Not perfect, but better. And of course, there's always the human variance / factor... my wife doesn't hear anything :)

I definitely feel this too, but hoping the alignment fixes it. If service can’t address these things are we just forced to live with it in a 70k* car?

Just confirming that yes, it's noisy. I mean there's no engine noise to cover it up like in my other trucks, but it could be improved.

I hope not. That would really suck. Alignment is another issue. Why do these things always require re-alignments? Something is fishy...

Subframes look sketchy to me in general(I am not a subframe engineer so probably don't know what I am talking about) Lots of welds and places for mistakes. Plus we have all seen evidence of factory checks of welds with markers and notations, on the subframes. Seems to indicate to me they know some slipped past the goalie with issues and they found them on customer trucks.

Just drove loaner along roads I’m familiar with. Makes all the same noises my truck makes, though I still don’t think it’s normal. Seriously feels like something is loose under the truck. Wind noise in loaner is worse than my truck. Alignment is better, though not perfect.

Wind noise is so weird….if no wind outside it’s tolerable…crosswinds of 15mph + and sounds like a hurricane is coming.

I hope this loaner isn’t a foreshadowing of what out trucks gonna be like. This is Forest Edge launch edition with 4500 miles. Wood is warped in one place and there’s a rattle coming from dash. Wind noise starts at 45-50 mph.

So I took mine in to the Chelsea SC this am. I took a tech for a drive looking for conditions that would mimic what I experience twice a day on a pretty banged up road near my house. He directed me to some train tracks and sure enough, we heard it BUMP BUMP BUMP as we went over. His response was that they all sound that way. We pooped around and hit it on the way back and he said it was normal and they’d check it over, but they air suspension is not silent over that type of road surface.

We talked through the other issues (there are a few, nothing earth shattering) and drove back.

Here’s where things get interesting.

My truck is a mid 15k vin with 20AT’s. The SC set me up with a loaner that’s a 12k win with 1,600 miles and 22’s. Much smoother ride generally. I was surprised. Maybe it was that they’re at 47psi to my AT’s 50 or 51? I was surprised by that.

Anyway, I was eager to get it back to my neighborhood to try I it on my favorite stretch of annoying garbage tarmac. Not quite apples to apples as we have a couple of inches of snow right now which might have impacted my drive with the tech, though I don’t think it would have made that much of a difference.

Anyway, the loaner was definitely *louder* than my truck over my test patch of road. So I’m guessing this is actually normal. Shrug.
