True torque vectoring.
Do we have any evidence that Rivian has actually figured out how to do that? Has anyone shown that the quad's stability control is measurably better than the dual's?

I completely agree that there are things that should be possible with a quad motor setup that are not possible with dual or tri motor configuration. However I don't think Rivian has actually implemented any of them.

Yes, I've seen it's enabled.

I can't say the stability control is specifically better. I can sat that when floor the quad on a gravel road it is insanely stable compared to other vehicles I've driven. I suspect the dual motor is too though, but haven't been in that.

True torque vectoring.
BMW has been doing "true torque vectoring" with only one engine for years.

But even with the BMW, it is a gimmick, with extremely little real world benefit to 99% of drivers.

On the other hand, things like the most range possible, the least complexity possible, and clean predictable handling are things that that same 99% of drivers can appreciate on a weekly if not daily basis.

I have little doubt that Tesla will continue to market the Tri Motor Cyber beast, and Rivian will continue to market 3 and 4 motor variants, marketed toward the same people that buy a Jeep Trackhawk.

Like the QM, the Jeep trackhawk is an amazing, and fun machine. But it has some significant downsides when compared to its more "normal" siblings. Range and off-roading capability are on that list for both vehicles.

Yep. Totally agree. Just noting a feature that does exist that some people appreciate. It's just a small number.

As soon as MB launched the EQG Electric G wagon, and they allow tank turn Rivian unlocks this feature. One of the primary reasons I selected the QM over DMP was the stability and torque vectoring capability. Also no need for a differential on a QM. All the 2m and 3m version need a locking differential on the front and rear to get the same functions. I also don't think Rivian has a differential on the DM units.

What I see in the future is Rivian rising price on R1 via new motor configurations and the R2 takes over the lower end.

They have made it clear the R1 will be the halo version so expect price increase and performance upgrades. The R1 platform is actually cheap compared to the cars it cross shops with.

FWIW, Mercedes is using a quad-motor setup in their forthcoming elctric Gelandewagen.

I have a feeling the quad motor Bosch versions will make these early R1's highly sought after in about 10 years.
I like the sound of that. ?

This sill be interesting. How the battery AND software hold up over time will tell the tale. There is so much new/better battery technology here already (see Kyle Connors Caterpillar CES vid) I doubt any of these vehicles become to great of s collectors item.

With all the hype of the R2, R3, and R3X, the R1 seems to have faded into the background. I have also been noticing that the R1 dual motor seems to be the more desirable version of the R1. I am now beginning to wonder if quad motor Rivians will soon pass into history.

Says the guy with 56 T-bird as his avatar. If you still like it, why would you start caring now? Personally, I have a 63 Sprint that I should use as my avatar.

I expect quad motors will remain a rarity and for off road enthusiasts, these vehicles will be in high demand. You could cut range in half and it's still great for towing to off road places.

I think they are making the Quad with Enduro motors, and they'll bring it out as the premium trim, do all the cost cutting stuff they need on the dual to get that price down, and keep those expensive features on the Quad. They have too many options right now and only one "trim", they need to bundle these things.
