What's your thoughts on using SSD like a Samsung t7 shield?
I think it's a much better option than a standard USB flash drive but I would still go for a Sandisk Max Endurance micro SD card as it has a much longer warranty (15 years vs 3 years on the T7) and is purpose built for this. Sandisk wouldn't be backing them like they are if they expect them to fail. I would go as far as to buy two of them so you have a backup if one does fail, and get them from BHPhoto not Amazon, as Amazon can have issues with counterfeit SD cards.

Don't use NVME drives inside a car. These are my NVME drives inside my computer, with heatsinks and fans mostly at idle. Imagine these drives, inside the console, on a hot day, recording gear guard video. It's just asking for trouble. Use memory cards designed for dashcams.

just purchased the T7 shield, rugged and will keep cooler with faster writing speeds.
I hope it works out. Those only have a three year warranty.

Holy smokes. That is some great data for folks on the fence between ssds and microSDs.

I'm going down the SSD route like many others. Hoping it doesn't fail within the first few years.

This makes me wonder if mounting it inside the console is a bad idea...no air flow...

Yeah, the 15 year warranty of the SanDisk Max endurance MicroSD cards really tells you what you need to know.

I updated the first post with some of the suggestions here. I don't have time to maintain the whole thing like a wiki though. I imagine by next week we will be posting photos of installs.

I think I'm going to go with:
  • Extreme SD card
  • Anker cable
  • Anker card reader

Thanks to everyone here - wealth of information and lots of useful info.

On a slight sidebar - is anyone a little disappointed that Rivian doesn't offer a more "built-in" solution to this? Would it have been a big ask to build in a high quality SD card reader into the center console or dashboard in the event things like this were ever added? Would be nice if they could offer a retro-fit to get a more complete option in the center console vs all of us rigging up SD card readers with dongles to get this to work.

I get memory fails, but a card reader implementation into the design of the car seems like a missed opportunity.

Not me...

I'm also happy they didn't put an 8-track, tape deck, or a cd-player in the dash...

shit like this wears out and becomes irrelevant in a very short period of time and for $30 I can unplug and put a new one in. Instead of needing a service appointment and waiting for parts... Plus, what technology should they use? SD? MicroSD? XD? a 12-in-1 reader so everybody can use anything from CF to XD and everything in between?

USB is universal. So, they gave you a universal port to plug whatever it is you want into there. You could use a thumb drive, then when it fails, just buy a new one. Or, you could choose to find an adapter and a MicroSD card that'll last a little longer... Your choice.

Eh, I think it is one of those things that could really cause a lot of headaches.

First, you definitely don't want it to be a permanent HD in the vehicle that is a pain to replace because of the nature of the read/write cycles wearing it out. If you had a permanent solution it would also be a pain to get stuff off of it. That is, it would be nice to have your phone get the items off of it via wifi and maybe that is a future feature based on what the app shows, but it would be a necessary feature to use the dashcam.

Second, if you put in an SD card slot or something, now it is something else you need to maintain and replace and when it dies it will render the whole dashcam non-functional. There is a reason Tesla and most other car makers don't fool with this hardware.

Also, remember, these small drives (use NVME chips inside) use the case as the heatsink. Careful what you place it on or near in the console. They can easily get over 150F when on load.

I politely disagree - people have clearly been using fixes for Tesla as people have mentioned, so there's precedent/need, it wasn't unforeseen - this was an opportunity to make a more functional car I feel. The USB-C port and a 2-1/SD Card reader of some kind in the center console aren't mutually exclusive designs, nor do they take up a bunch of space, I'd imagine they knew they were always going to offer this type of option through an update as they knew they would be compared to Tesla.

I'm not terribly upset about this, and appreciate the increase in capability - but still feel it was a missed design opportunity and would like a better solution than a dongle we're all trying to figure out how to jerry rig in our center console so that it doesn't overheat/break/get knocked into.
