Yeah if you live in the nd/sd/mt/wy it’s not the right time for ev unless you’re just daily driving. And daily is fine regardless if you have your home charging.
Read somewhere that EA has a station under construction at the Smiths grocery in Evanston, WY. May drive over there one day this week to confirm and see how far along it is.

I see nothing but a single station 30 miles away with 70kw or better. WTF But there are a few 50 kw chargers around. I should have ordered my charging units sooner but I was pleasantly surprised by my R1T arriving sooner than anticipated
Rivian has half the charging efficency of the most efficent EVs. It's not realistic to not charge on 240V at home.

Fast chargers near you home don't matter. Fast chargers where you travel matter

I don't understand the thought process behind the installation of 6.6-7.4kw chargers that seem to be the most common around here.
I believe part of the problem is commercial lighting circuits (208V) are being repurposed for these shopping center L2 EVSEs. 32A @ 208V is 6.6kWh.

Correct. These L14-50 outlets are not full 250V at 42A (10.5kW) and the one near me delivers 7kW … so it's a full overnight charge to get from 20% (ish) go 70% ("daily.")
I did charge at 350kW charger recently and pulled 200kW for most of the charge back to 60% +/- ... that was nice … : )

IMO, fast chargers near home are very important. If there are not any fast chargers near your home, you can't make it to all of the chargers near where you were hoping to travel too.

But I guess it depends on your definition of "near". When the closest fast charger is a few hundred miles away, "near" has a very different meaning than when there are 10 chargers within 10 miles of your house.

The joy of EV ownership is changing at home. If I had to rely on public chargers I would not be driving an EV yet. I plug my Model S in every night and every day I have a car with plenty of range. And I average about 60kWh of solar energy generated off my roof every day to offset the cost. IF I need to travel distances I can use the superchargers, but I have rarely needed them for daily life.

Rivian will be a step back from the Tesla because it takes longer to charge, is much less efficient and the public charging situation compared to Tesla's superchargers is a giant leap backwards. But we need a pick up truck (horses and horse stuff) and as long as I'm charging at home, the experience of driving EV will essentially be the same.

Unless you don't have access to a power outlet at home (ie an apartment parking lot), fast chargers near home are meaningless.

You'd probably want them 100 mi out.

For a couple of months I’m going to have to be reliant on public charging for the R1T. I have an EA station nearby which is my main go to. The speedis ok - I have been charging at pretty high battery levels so see a big drop-off in charging rates as the battery fills up but it’s a bit pricey @ 0.43c/kW. Have been spoiled with free supercharging with the Midel S.

I’m sure ? Rivian is going to improve the overall efficiency of the battery in time.
Sign up for their $4/month membership and you get $0.31/kWh charge instead of $0.43

The one time a local fast charger should always be visited is with a new EV. Make sure it will DC charge before you set out on a trip. Plus you will want to be out and about showing off your new toy.

I would be surprised if anyone doesn't plan on home charging with a Rivian. Fast charging is less than half the miles per hour compared to a model 3/Y and other efficient EVs that can use high amps. Sitting at a local charger for 30-60+ minutes for some fuel is only fun for a few weeks.

It's interesting that a few Youtube reviewers slipped up and called the Rivian efficient. It's obviously not. It has a huge battery and therefore good range. But at most people's home electricity rate the charging cost is still not a big deal. I expect the Cybertruck will be significantly more efficient than the R1T for those desiring to present themselves as Mad Max devotees.

Yea, I’m just stuck for a couple of months without home charging but once that happens it’ll all be good. I did sign up for the EA monthly pass - it helps. The charging can be fast, or not so.
I did a 5 hour RT the other day and stopped for a change at an EA and it was really quick.
