Just a reminder that this is not as simple as some are implying. The Ramcharger includes a full Pentastar V6 under the hood.
That's the thing "under the hood"... Doing this would change so many things about the R1's that are actual selling points, regardless of the fact that it is quite contrary to the core of what Rivian stands for. May as well buy the Ram Charger or the Scout and put a Rivian wrap on them if that's what they want. This conversation is fairly silly really.

Imagine taking an already 7000# vehicle and adding a 4 or 6cyl motor and a fuel tank to it...

When has Rivian done something because "that's what the other guys do?" Some of what they do is not totally innovative, sure, BUT, they got there their own way.

RJ has mentioned in a few interviews about how much adding in a gas extender is not just a failing of the fossil fuel-free future goal, but that it's difficult from an engineering perspective.... it's also a distraction. The time you spend trying to integrate gas anything with an EV is time you aren't spending making the EV part better.

Dodge, Scout: we’re adding a gas engine! Please clap! We might sell 10,000 vehicles per year with a gas engine!

BYD: good for you. We’re introducing 1MW charging and solid state batteries. We might sell 10M vehicles per year

I can see a bigger battery but nothing that burns gas, it isn't in RJ's head to do this.

Eventually battery Technology will catch up to compete against vehicles that can tow for 600 miles Without stopping. But to breach the gap for the next decade, some for of extra rage is needed. That was the only reason I had a reservation for the cyber truck, ~500mile range , would equate to about ~250 miles of towing (Doable). But as everyone knows, it was a lie.

We already have something in place to 'breach' [SIC] the gap... They are called ICE.

EVs can't, currently, adequately fill evey use case for every vehicle for every person. And that's OK. If EVs don't fit your use case yet, use an ICE that does until which time EVs can replace it properly. But putting an overly complicated Band-Aid on the problem doesn't solve it.

Who in the heck drives 600 miles without stopping?!? I believe the more important technology upgrade needed is faster DCFC speeds. With BYD just announcing 1000 kW, 500 kW seems realistic in the coming 5-10 yrs with Rivian. Obviously DCFC's would need to catch up here in the states, but heck even if they could max out the 350 kW units, that would be fantastic!

Also if batteries can sustain high charge rates for longer that would help even more than 500 kW speeds.

Towing.... the range is half or less. So that 600 miles is about 260

I love the concept of the Ramcharger. Would be great if Rivian went that direction.

It's a full EV that can fast charge and drive well over 100 miles electric only. That's 98% of people's daily driving. Yes it also has a gas generator that only function is powering the EV full electric drivetrain. That is nothing like an ICE hybrid.

That gas generator is critical when you drive through places like Roswell New Mexico with zero fast chargers or tow where range is about 100 miles in an R1. The the other 98% of the time drivers will just use it like any EV.

Do you see 98% of vehicles being EVs today? This solution is MUCH better for the environment.

That also gets way more people into EVs who are nervous about not being able to find a charger.

The concept is great and I hope other auto companies give consumers these options. That would save way more fossil fuels getting EVs into those consumers hands. Charging is a mess in rural American and that's not going to improve for decades.

Also allows more battery cells for more EVs since they don't need full 135kwH packs as the R1 hogs.

Will Rivian explore that option? I would love it but yeah have my doubts.

Nope. Range extenders and gas generators will never happen with Rivian. If you want that, go buy a different brand. Meanwhile, Rivian will work on implementing higher density batteries into their line up
I refuse to believe that any company is out there to do anything other than make the most money it can. However, looking at the direction of the company and what the brand wants to represent, there will never be an ICE extender option. The only way it can happen is if they become mainstream and sell in very significant numbers
