I had my tailgate replaced at a Rivian certified shop. The part is about $950. Just sharing a data point.

That said, quote seems high to me.

Prep and prime. Sand. Paint. Cure. Address imperfections. Buff/polish and installation. Plus, repair isn't isolated to just the damaged part*. There is paint blending and polishing of adjacent body panels. No, it isn't high. Any body & paint work, when done right, takes time, manual labor and care. There is of course the profit margin the shop adds in for sake of sustainability of their business... like any other. No, it's not high. In some parts of the county, it's double the quote OP received.

*This is why pro used car buyers use a gauge to measure paint thickness of each body panel. This is how they can tell if a car has had collision repair done.

Unfortunately, too damaged for pdr
I don't think the damage is too great.....I've seen some that looked almost like wrinkled aluminum foil get done......I have a spare tailgate that was damaged by a shop. The shop bought me a new tailgate and the Rivian Authorized guys installed it and might I add, the tailgate auto drop function works infinitely better than OEM. I repaired my OEM via PDR and a body artisan and it is hanging on the wall as a back up.

Gate is aluminum. Side panels steel. Steel much easier to PDR.
A good glue pull PDR specialist doesn't have any challenges with aluminum....they did mine....

Is getting access to the inside of the tailgate an option? Hammering out dents from the inside has been my go to for doors and body panels with interior access. I have not tried taking apart a tailgate and do not know whether the insides are accessible.

As mentioned above... I'd find a good trusted bodyshop and ask them what it would cost to paint and replace, if you found an undented one on Ebay. I bet you could get it all done for about $2000 - $2500. Nothing special about a Rivian tailgate, verse the thousands that get stolen and replaced every year on other trucks.

I did a search on ebay and found the non dented ones to be $800 to $1000... then once you finish the repair, throw yours up for sale for $300 and make some money back.

I unfortunately hit an upper barrier while backing into a parking spot. The barrier was above the rear view camera, so I missed it completely.

I got an estimate to fix it from a Rivian Certified body shop. It came out to $4800.

They’ll be ordering a brand new tailgate from Rivian.

Just sharing a data point.

If you can get an unpainted one from Rivian -- it's a $2000 job.

My outgoing Silverado needs a new gate and the full job is $1850. The problem is the part isn't available so I'm struggling to sell the damn thing.
