I've seen a couple of threads recently about the AC/Compressor noise, and here's my limited anecdotal observation.

I took my R1T in to the Service Center just before the most recent update was released. There was no unusual sound when the AC was running (though I had noticed similar noise when my truck was pre-conditioning for fast charge back in March, but I digress). They gave me a loaner R1T while doing the service on mine. The loaner sounded fine, just like mine for the first couple of days. Then the new update came out to get the alert to stop popping up ever time I got in the truck, I ran the update (even though it wasn't my truck). After the update, I noticed that the AC was much louder.

Two weeks later, my R1T was ready for pickup, so I go back down to the Service Center and swap back to my truck. On the 45 minute drive home, I did not notice any excessive noise from the AC, so I figured maybe it was a just a fluke/error with the loaner and the timing was nothing but a coincidence. When I get home, the prompt for an update comes up, so I run the update. The next day, I take the truck out and very quickly notice that the AC is making that same excessive noise that I had heard in the loaner.

So, for what it's worth, I suspect it's something to do with the latest update and am simply biding my time until the next update comes out to see if it's been addressed.

I understand but what would you do if you had the issue and RIvian kept saying "vehicle is operating as designed" as their response? I've had my R1S in twice for this issue. Both times they stated working as designed. I told them to keep it until fixed. They called me back and threatened to start charging me storage fees if I didn't come get the vehicle.
WTF. Are they playing hardball with you? I'm beginning to hate this Dallas Service center. I'm having a service schedule this friday for some wind noise and subwoofer rattles that they didn't solve two months ago.

At least you can't hear to tok or the loud motors. :p

On a more serious note this R1S AC issue is making all other issues seem rather trivial.
Oh at low speeds the click/ tok noise coming from the wheels is present on my R1S.

The "storage fee" comment was beyond poor service

Sorry to hear about that. Definitely poor service. I'm wondering if it is only this service center? Are you driving one of their loaner at the moment?

That's me. It was a little above 70 outside. I have to set the ac to low(all the way down) to get it to spin that fast. Auto on the fan and the fan is not an issue. I have vin 10,xxx. It rarely gets that loud if my temp is set to 68. I also have not parked in full sun very much. I'm sure it will spin up faster when it reaches 100 here and I have it parked in the sun for a while. It made the loud noise when we picked it up at the Dallas location. They said the R1S just does that. It stopped after about a minute when we were there.
I love the vehicle and I am going to wait for Rivian to come up with a fix. Or get a new compressor if this one flies apart.
I think i will wait for solution also. I never set temp to low (usually 68 auto).

My experience on loud noise.
1. some very morning for couple second when i opened the door. it gets quiet down after.
2. this Sat i park the R1S under the sun, internal temp 115 (outside 85), the AC got pretty loud. I felt some shaking on the petal.

I did see some A/C related software updates when I saw 2023.22.00 beta on my neighbors R1T, but I didn't pay too much attention because all these a/c posts weren't made yet. Ill ask him specifically what they were, if I see him later.

I mentioned this in another thread about AC noise - Rivian should take a few of these noisy vehicles and evacuate and weigh the amount of refrigerant, and verify against design spec. Overcharge of refrigerant can cause compressor buzzing. With refrigeration, more refrigerant is not better and does not lead to increased cooling capacity. Too much refrigerant is as bad as too little refrigerant.
This is my thinking. Something not to spec on the refrigerant. Air bubble/void in line, too much pressure, etc.

EDIT: Apologies to @MidnightRivian since I managed to confuse him with @DallasBBQ. I’m leaving this here because I was wrong and I’m not interested in revising history in some attempt to show that I wasn’t.

@RJ ARE YOU HEARING THIS SHIT???

This is the exact AC noise everyone is talking about at full load. You can see the compressor in action screaming HOLD ON DEAR LIFE - HODL

Is this what you had in mind when you designed the HVAC and hiked up the prices $20,000??

The vibrations in the pedals and floor pan don't really help sell the story that EV's are quieter than ICE.

On Friday you wrote, ”I'm done w/ new threads. I posted new today because I felt the call w/ Rivian last night was new news since they finally admit the issue exists. Sorry if that was not the correct protocol. Just frustrated. I'm a fairly new forum poster.” in this thread: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...ledges-r1s-ac-noise-problem.16133/post-349837

Here you are on Monday with… a new thread. Why apologize for doing this on Friday if you intend to keep spamming the forum? Please give them time to figure out exactly what the problem is, identify which vehicles are affected, and roll out a solution which the service centers can implement reliably and efficiently.

I think you are confusing OP, different user with same issue but yeah I agree there are ‘quite’ a few threads on this topic now.

Everything else aside, there is no world where that noise coming from a passenger vehicle would be acceptable. You should never need to, "turn up the stereo" or whatever to have an enjoyable drive.

I think we all need to support whomever posted that video, and others experiencing a similar issue, in taking reasonable steps to get it solved. Having issues like this persist hurts all owners and the company.

Yes, sorry, and I already edited my post to reflect that. I think most readers could understand how I made the mistake.

It’s an a/c noise that Rivian did eventually acknowledge so I still think we need to give them time to come up with a real solution. If the a/c wasn’t working at all then summer heat, especially in Texas, could effectively render it un-drivable. THAT would be a significant issue to me. Having to convince the service center that the noise was abnormal is also an issue to me because we don’t want Rivian going down that road. Once they admit it is a problem and that they are working on the fix… let them work on it.

My 2022 R1T has been making the exact same noise now that it has gotten really hot here. It usually only lasts for a few minutes, but it’s very annoying.

I really regret having headphones on when playing that video. Especially when the sound starts and it's only coming into one ear. ?‍

Mine doesn't do that, but I only park in the garage (insulated) or in the shade (so far). Please keep us updated on getting it fixed!
