Just remember---memberships make money for the company that sells them. Costco makes 72% of their overall profits strictly from their membership fees.

AFAIK, you can only get the Tesla membership rate if you initiate the session from the Tesla app. You’ll get the standard rate if you plug-and-play through the Rivian system. Someone disabuse me if this observation if it is incorrect please.
This is correct. Same with the Bluedot app which can save you a lot also. And you can stack the Bluedot 20% savings on top of your Tesla account discount.

Accurate but meaningless factoid, the only thing that matters is your own math. I do road trips where the membership would help a couple times a year. The other road trips would be net zero or just barely a savings. So I'll just use the Bluedot card as mentioned above. I have opportunities to charge at zero cost at the destinations for these trips which affects my cost a lot, this will vary a lot for others of course.

I just tried a supercharger near me after signing up for the Tesla membership this AM to make sure all would go smoothly ahead of a long road trip over the next 2 weeks. Tesla said it delivered 16kw at $0.39/kw, $6.24 total. My Rivian app said it gained 13kw... Not sure which is correct. If Rivian is accurate, I am paying more than the advertised benefits of $0.39/kw.. more like $0.48/kw.

It's normal to see some loss between the charger and your car. You're paying for electrical losses in the cabling as well. That being said, 3 kw seems a bit high for such a short charge.

To be clear, the kWh are rounded to the nearest kWh. For that reason alone, the actual difference could be as little as 2 kWh. But the Rivian is only reporting the amount the battery gained. Therefore the consumption by the climate control, battery thermal conditioning, charging losses, stereo, etc. is not reported by the Rivian.

Basically, there is probably not a conspiracy by Tesla to charge you for more electricity than your Rivian actually used!

I usually sign up for the membership rates when I go on a road trip and plan to use the Tesla supercharger network at least twice.

You need to make sure you initiate the charge using the Tesla app then connect your adapter and then connect the adapter/handle to your vehicle to take advantage of the membership rates.

When you use plug and charge, it will default to the standard rates.

Anyone using or will be using the Tesla charging membership ($12.99/mo)?
Think it's worth it?

Along the same vein, anyone use the EA Pass+? Worth it?
It’s individual math, literally…to determine whether it’s worthwhile depending on driving routes, planned trips etcS
For me; it would only have to be about 2-3 significant fast charges per month to break even…:but that said, I’ve charged away from home less than 10x in 2.5 years

There is literally only one “Tesla” app. Look for the one with the trademark logo

This is what I observed during my road trip from Wisconsin to Memphis this past weekend. I only charged at superchargers. The first 2 stops I simply plugged in and was charged the higher rate. The rest of the stops I initiated through the Tesla app and received the membership discount.

Live and learn.

I sent the following email to Rivian:

“
The Plug N Charge feature on my R1 is overriding charging sessions that I initiate with the Tesla app, which means I don’t get my membership rate (ie I pay more through Rivian, which is annoying when I specifically bought a one month membership with Tesla to get reduced rates).

There needs to be a way to specify to my vehicle NOT to use PNC - there is no clear delineation in the user experience that helps a user to understand when the charge will happen via the Tesla app or that PNC will take over.

As such, about 2/3 of the charges on my first trip utilizing Superchargers were initiated via PNC even when I didn’t want them to be. I’m on my second trip and I’ve got it down to 1/2, but even being aware of the issue I haven’t been able to get the vehicle to only start off the Tesla app.

Please pass this info onto Wassym and the software team.”

edit: thought I’d add that when using the Tesla app it gives you a screen once you select the stall that tells you to plug in the adapter and plug in the truck. I used to plug in right away and seemed to have PNC take over; now I wait a bit but it still takes over sometimes. Super annoying.

Ford has this feature where you can turn it off.

I just got the membership we're stopping at a place with Magic Dock, but I have the adapter. Theoretically initializing in app will unlock it and use membership rate, right? Should I try using my own adapter instead of magic dock?

Yes, initialize using the Tesla app if you have a charging membership to get the membership rate. Be patient, sometimes it’s slow to connect. I would use the Magic Dock even if you have an adapter.
